This is a great idea. We all should be pleased to cooperate with a man who has brought decency back to the White House and leadership back to our nation.

Is there to be no arena free of government's tentacles?

Get the government out of charity work. They just muck it up.

The president also mentioned faith based work. If people don't want to help through a program he mentioned, do it through a church. Either way, let's show what we're made of. Then, the more we do individually or through churches, the less we will need programs such as these.

No, I don't particularly like more government programs. I hope they can create a spirit of helping that makes them unnecessary.

Wow. The site is barely up a few hours when paranoia strikes. I suggest we take breather and look into it.

Actually, this doesn't sound so bad to me:

From the Citizen's Corp site:

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. CERT members give critical support to first responders in emergencies, provide immediate assistance to victims, organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site, and collect disaster intelligence to support first responder efforts.

The CERT course is taught in the community by a trained team of first responders who have completed a CERT Train-the-Trainer course conducted by their state training office for emergency management, or FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI), located in Emmitsburg, Maryland. CERT training includes disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, and light search and rescue operations.

Over the next two years, the CERT program aims to double the number of participants, with over 400,000 individuals completing the 18 plus hours of training. Communities in 28 states have initiated CERT training and additional Train-the-Trainer sessions will be held over the next year to expand the program throughout the United States.

(sarcasm) I have a better solution that will take the spot of all 3 USA Freedom Corps groups - It's called the US Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. They will spread "peace" and the "freedom" worldwide, giving aid to whomever requests it.

How many more redundant "Corps" will we need to piss away the last of the taxpayers' hard-earned money?

We've already got VISTA, Peace Corps and a lot of other crap - are the D.C. parasites NEVER satisfied?

What a Republican-perpetrated waste.

I don't get it, is there are shortage of volunteer opportunities where you live?

Why is it a good thing to Federalize volunteering? We all seem to agree that local government works better than the Feds on education and a whole host of other issues. Why do you presume that the Feds have a better idea of what the volunteer needs of this country than your local volunteer organizations.

If you ask me, this is going to harm volunteerism is those who might otherwise go down to their local volunteer organizations might instead go through the feds who will use them in a less efficient manner.

How many Govt "Corps" do we need? I'm sorry but this is a plain, old liberal "feel good" effort. It doesnt solve anything but it makes the liberals "feel good" about themselves! Here in MerryLand, High Schoolers are required to take a course on "Volunteerism' and serve the community for 100 hrs in order to graduate. Complusary volunteerism! Ain't it Grand???

From the USA Freedom Corps Blueprint:

Community and Faith-Based Organizations. Additional AmeriCorps members will provide full-time or intensive service in support of small community and faith-based organizations, which often operate with limited resources. In particular, this Administration will expand and reshape AmeriCorps*VISTA, a component of AmeriCorps, for this purpose.

Let's see now. They're going to put a full-time person into our Crisis Pregnancy Center and they are going to pray with and counsel girls to keep their babies rather than getting abortions? They are going to intensively (and anonymously) pray with active drunks and addicts and explain the gospel to them?

Mmmmm, I don't think so. No thanks. Please keep your nose out of my faith based voluntary organizations.
