| New Zealander builds Hobbit hole A New Zealand man has built a Hobbit house. Carl Gifford, a stonemason from Wellington, says he used a 10-tonne digger to make the hole. He's put rocks either side of the front door and plans to install a chimney and lantern on top. He told the Evening Post he was embarrassed as he was constructing the home. He said: "I must admit I was hiding as the cars were driving past. I thought, 'These people think I'm an idiot'." The house is part of a series of stonework mounds, designs and sculptures dotted around his land. "I'm just having a bit of fun. Things that were built by those ancient people like caves have always fascinated me." |
I'm planning to go again Thursday, as long as it's still at the theatres. That'll be number 8 for me. I just can't get bored of this movie!
Check my #1507, if you missed it. I know what you mean. The viewing described in #1507 was then followed by another two days later, with Josiah — still love it, still it flies by. There are only two scenes that really don't totally do it for me, which is to say two scenes during which I'd be willing to get popcorn refill or visit the little wizard's room. That would be the Battle of the Wizards (important plot turn, but two old guys throwing each other around... well, you know), and Lothlorien. Sorry about the latter: I defend Jackson's version of it and everything, but it just doesn't work for me, what can I say? So a total of, what, ten minutes earning a C in a movie with 248 minutes of A to A+, that ain't bad.
Heck, not only not boring to me, but I was just about as leaky Sunday as I was Friday!

I don't think I've ever seen a movie that long (over 4 hours!). That's even longer than Ben-Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. I think you mean either 178 minutes or 2:48?
Of course, I certainly would not mind if it was that long...

I sure am glad to be back safe in our little Hobbit-Hole--what was I thinking, Jen? Try to be gentle and reasonable, and get your head bitten off--yup, that's FreeRepublic outside of Middle Earth. Yikes.

Now....where were we? Ah yes....I get to go see the movie with HairOfTheDog today!!!!!! Yippeee!!!! Only 5.5 hours to go!

It is safer - and friendlier - in here. But there are some interesting discussions out there. Still, I got stepped on twice this weekend - once for admitting that I was a neophyte programmer and still having an opinion (that non-programmers can't make sense of code!) and once on that other thread because I "wasn't contributing anything". Guess which side said that....
I'm envious, I have to wait until Thursday to go again. Oh well; I'll make it.

I saw that. You know, that thread could have been a healthy discussion if it didn't so quickly devolve into name-calling and mean-spiritedness. That's always so disappointing.
Bummer that you can't go till Thursday. I think tonight will probably be my last for a while, although I doubt very much that I'll be able to hold out till the trailer for TTT comes out. I start to go into withdrawal within a couple of days, lol...
I put in a plug with my friend that I went with last night to read the books--I hope she does. I was realizing how much more poignant and emotionally touching the latter half of the movie is when you know what is coming for the characters later on in the story. When Frodo was standing on the riverbank making his decision, I almost lost it completely thinking about what that decision would mean for him. It amazes me how much richer the story gets--the more you know, the more times you read it, the more you see it, the richer everything becomes. There are precious few stories like that in the world, and practically NO movies like that outside of LOTR...
One of the things I learned was the whole Boromir-Aragorn situation is totally confusing to someone who doesn't know the historical background. I spent quite a while explaining to her where Gondor was and about the stewards having to go it alone without a king for so long.

Now that is an encouraging thought...there's one within 2 miles of my home. That would be just too easy, I'd never be able to pass it up, lol...

My guess is that TTT will come out for a 2 week limited run of FOTR for the 2 weeks prior to the Oscars, and then will be gone from first-run movie houses. Then, at that point I would think it would go to the discount theaters--the question then will be whether they show the print with TTT preview or not at the discount places.
I'm not sure what the chances will be as far as whether or not it will actually be shown at the discount theaters. I have no idea what goes into those kinds of decisions.
That's my best guess....anyone else want to make their predictions? ;)

All right, I confess. I'm just mad because I can't go camp out for Two Towers. Is it my fault that I want an education and that my family would come and mock me daily?
But I like the wizard fight, even though it is hard to watch... My other picky peeve is during the "Indiana Jones" sequence in Moria with the stair collapsing... First, why on earth would Frodo be the last one to be helped across? I would think he would have been helped first! Who are we here for anyway? - But also because the whole "lean forward, guide the falling ruin gently toward the waiting Fellowship" part defies the imagination... I know... unheard of in a fantasy huh!
If I were that age and in that same situation now, I would definitly camp out for TTT. I can just imagine the cameraderie would be fantastic. If you were with me, we could sit and while the time away playing chess! Not for more than a 24 hour period though...
Actually, I pass those guys every time I drop in at the Cinerama--they're camped out in the parking lot. HairOfTheDog will get the dubious honor of seeing them today.
...the whole thing is just embarrassing.
