New Zealander builds Hobbit hole

New Zealander builds Hobbit hole

A New Zealand man has built a Hobbit house.

Carl Gifford, a stonemason from Wellington, says he used a 10-tonne digger to make the hole.

He's put rocks either side of the front door and plans to install a chimney and lantern on top.

He told the Evening Post he was embarrassed as he was constructing the home.

He said: "I must admit I was hiding as the cars were driving past. I thought, 'These people think I'm an idiot'."

The house is part of a series of stonework mounds, designs and sculptures dotted around his land.

"I'm just having a bit of fun. Things that were built by those ancient people like caves have always fascinated me."

Is this going to degenerate into the 'hunky-Numenorean-males' thread? If so, have the bookmarks come back yet?

In the time that I've been sitting here, my six year old has drawn a picture of Isengard with Gandalf and Saruman fighting on top and the eagle flying to the rescue. He also drew a picture of Smaug flying out of the Lonely Mountain. And a picture of Frodo with a Ringwraith on Weathertop.

I don't know about you folks, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how the men in the next few movies are portrayed. Faramir, Eomer, etc. Especially Faramir...he's one of my favorites.

WHY do people keep saying there's not much in these movies for women? Are they BLIND? ;-)

Oh baby baby

Mom!!! 0c8=

Well, even I will admit that the first shot of Aragorn's eyes lit with the glow of his pipe is pretty darned cool.

Alright, I admit it...I'm having an affair with Cinema 8! LOL!!

Seriously though, among the things I discussed with my husband last night was how nothing in all these years has ever come close to matching my imagination when it came to these books. No artwork or anything. I told him that, when I was younger, I used to try to sketch pictures of the characters and how they looked in my mind. I think I still have the sketches up in the attic. Anyway, this movie was the first time anything came close to how I've always imagined it, and could prove it if I could find those sketches.

The movie not only came close to how I imagined, it pretty well nailed it.

Astounding.

I'm with you... can't wait for Gollum and Smeagol. Andy Sirks who plays Gollum says he has a voice for each one. That is going to be so cool!

Everyone is invited to my house for the director's cut of LOTR...

Me either! I can't wait to see the differences between Stinker and Slinker, for one...and Sam's interaction with him/them/it.

And, though we only got a brief glimpse of Gollum in FOTR, after reading The Two Towers again I'm convinced he looks exactly as he should, down to that slimy hair and the big luminous eyes. This will be so cool!

I agree that the movie pretty much nailed it, but it was only possible because of the depth of the author. Tolkien was a master of description and even though everyone paints their own vision of characters and places, the depth and precision of the descriptions kept us all close to the same page.

(Although I must add the Lorien was much different than I had pictured and feel it could have been better)

If anyone is interested in listening to clips from the soundtrack, Amazon has some here.

Does anyone have the soundtrack? I'm going to get it right now! The music in this movie is spectacular.

I do. The CD is pretty repetitive... since the music is more compact.

Still, I like it...

Oh, I'm glad you asked. Hope I catch you before you buy.

I do have the soundtrack, and am very disappointed. It is MISSING some MAJOR PORTIONS of the music. Makes me wonder whether this was a version wrapped up before all the music was through.

It does have the Black Riders, it does have the moth music, and other moments.

It DOES NOT have the opening strains with the recurring Ring theme (daa daaaa, da da da da da da daa daaaa....) until the end of the album, or Arwen's music, or other key moments.

My wife says she's seen other versions. I'm going to have to check that out. I'll try to let you know if I learn anything; mine may be the best there is, but if so I am really nonplused at their choices.

HairOfTheDog mentioned that the entire soundtrack was available in streaming form somewhere on the net.

BibChr, they did use several different CD covers for the soundtrack -- one being a "collector's edition" (I guess extra liner notes?) but they all feature the same music.

I'm a sucker for bombastic themes a la those written by Basil Poledouris and John Williams. Hopefully, Shore will be a little less restrained in the next two movies.

I have it. I agree that it doesn't contain everything, but I like it. Especially the Khazad Dûm track (13?). And the lament to Gandalf in the Lorien portion. And the music that plays when Arwen and Aragorn are together at the bridge...

I REALLY need to see the movie again. I've only seen it four times, so I'm way behind most of you!

Well, if he doesn't hold back I'll need to be warned so I don't go to the same cinema I went to last night! They had the volume cranked up so high I nearly went deaf in my one remaining hearing ear! LOL (It was fabulous, though...)

Everyone is invited to my house for the director's cut of LOTR...

Ohio is a good centrally located place to meet, but let's wait till all three movies are out in directors cut. I'm sure my husband, who's not that wild about LOTR would be happy to keep us supplied with popcorn...he makes a great bowl of stovetop popped corn with plenty of butter and popcorn salt.

Have you got a big screen TV? If not, maybe we could all pitch in and rent one!!
