WTC Flag Raising Petition Breaks 75K Signatures
WTC Flag Raising Petition ^ | January 23, 2002 | Jeff Head

Posted on 01/23/2002 12:55:02 PM PST by Jeff Head

The petition addressed to the New York City Government and to the Fire Department Administrators of New York City has surpassed 75,000 signatures since it was first posted on the internet on January 15th, a little over a week ago. The petition protests the proposed WTC Flag Raising memorial staute which changed the ethnicity of the fireifghters who actually raised the flag and used "pristine" models to poprtray the firefighters rather than depicting them in the exhausted, grimey and actual state they were in.

After a few short days of circulation, and in concert with a petition circulating within the New York Fire Department itself, and in concert with the tremendous outpouring of protest by email, by phone, by mail and by talk radio, the City of New York announced that it would scrap the proposed "altered" statue and "investigate" other options.

Many have asked why the petition then continues.

The answer is simple and straight forward. Item two of the petition calls for the City of New York and the Fire Department to scrap ANY politically correct or potentially "culturally diverse" memorial that does not reflect accurately what happened that day. Until a concrete plan is proposed that achieves this end, the petition will continue.

In addition, more and more people are now calling on the city to include the flag raising as it actually occurred as the memorial. The people, of all walks of life and across the spectrum of political affiliation, are upset that the flag would be considered as acceptable if it was altered, but somehow may not be acceptable if it is accurate. Such blatant politicising of this event has touched a raw nerve with the American people.

We are a diverse people, but in America we are also supposed to be a united people. That flag, that those three firemen raised, represents everyone of us. The planners needed look no further than the flag itself to see all races, sexes and cultures represented that come together to make us all Americans.

Now that there is "talk" and "press releases" of the these political and administrative planners bowing to the pressure and not creating such a depiction of the statue, I say BRAVO to all involved that we have perhaps helped influence them towards a correct decision. It is a shame that such pressure had to be brought to bear, but sadly, a reality of today's world and something that should not be forgotten.

But, until a final decision is reached and it is clear that they do not intend to attempt to revise history, I believe we should keep up the pressure. So, please continue to email, tell and point others to the petition.

LET US BURY ANY NOTION OF REVISIONISM OR "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS" ASSOCIATED WITH THE EVENTS OF 911!

Several are looking at the possibility of actually delivering the names on the petition, bound into books, to the City of New York when the petition reaches 100,000 signatures and again when it reaches 250,000, 500,000 and one million, should it go that far.

I belief it should go that far and hope that it does in any case. A clear, unequivocal message MUST be sent that the days of "political correctness" and "diverse" agendas is done. We are Americans, from different cultures and ethnicities it is true, but united as Americans under our flag, under our Constitution and with our liberty.

The Soldier by General Douglas MacArthur

When the Country is in need, it has always been the Soldier.

It's the Soldier, not the newspaper reporter, who has given us Freedom of the Press.

It's the Soldier, not the Poet, who has given us Freedom of Speech.

It's the Soldier, not the campus organizer who has given us Freedom to demonstrate.

It's the Soldier, who salutes the Flag, who serves under the Flag.

It's the Soldier who is called upon to defend our American way of life.

Disposing of the American Flag

Remember never burn a complete flag as it is still "Old Glory". Cut away the field of blue stars then it is no longer our flag. The pieces may then be burned separately for disposal.

The Boy Scouts even go so far as to cut away the stipes from one another and burn them separately or one at a time.

The name "Old Glory" was first applied to the U.S. flag by a young sea captain who lived in Salem, Mass. On his twenty-first birthday, March 17, 1824, Capt. William Driver was presented a beautiful flag by his mother and a group of Salem girls. Driver was delighted with the gift. He exclaimed, "I name her 'Old Glory." Then Old Glory accompanied the captain on his many voyages.

Captain Driver quit the sea in 1837. He settled in Nashville, Tenn. On patriotic days he displayed Old Glory proudly from a rope extending from his house to a tree across the street. After Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861, Captain Driver hid Old Glory. He sewed the flag inside a comforter. When Union soldiers entered Nashville on February 25, 1862, Driver removed Old Glory from its hiding place. He carried the flag to the state capitol building and raised it.

Shortly before his death, the old sea captain placed a small bundle into the arms of his daughter. He said to her, "Mary Jane, this is my ship flag, Old Glory. It has been my constant companion. I love it as a mother loves her child. Cherish it as I have cherished it."

The flag remained as a precious heirloom in the Driver family until 1922. Then it was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, where it is carefully preserved under glass today.

I feel bad for not knowing all the criteria for respecting our Flag. I was in the Army 25 years ago.

I have a Flag hanging inside my front porch, stars up and to the left. It's unlit, but inside.

I also have two Flag stickers in my truck windows, both facing as if they were real and the truck moving, I know technically that makes one wrong.

My Flags have been flying long before September 11.

Isn't it good to fly the Flag as long as it is not disgraced?

If we are going to get technical, what does it mean when the Flag is made in China and flown on an imported vehicle?

I'm not trying to be funny or difficult.

This is such a great country that we have been fortunate to be a part of. Where else can you be born in proverty and through hard work rise to the top? Where else can you be guaranteed an education (even though mediocre in some places)? Where else can you obtain your dreams no matter who you are? Where else can you live your faith without persecution? Where else would your fellow man stand by your side and offer a helping hand when disaster hits? Where else would your fellow man be willing to give his life so that you may live free? Where else can you express your thoughts, ideas, and opinions without fear? Where else can you have alittle bit of land that you can call your own? and where else can you be able to spend time on a tremendous website such as Free Republic and communicate freely with your fellow man? I guess you could say I am damn proud to be an American and damn proud of our flag and what it and our country stands for.
