Recently I have been involved in several threads dealing with minimum wages, fair wages, and taxes on the wealthy. Somehow, even though I am pretty "conservative", I manage to be on the opposite side of most freepers on these issues.
So, for fun, and for a view of the "other" side, I present some links to the AFLCIO website.

There are other fun things on the site. Browse around here and play the "Greed" game:

Aah goody. For a long time everyone complained because the CEOs made money even when the companies did bad. So they started getting more compensation in stock, or at least tied it to company value. Then the stock market ran wild, so the CEOs got really rich. Now that's bad. The bottom line is ALWAYS:

BTW, according to the amusing calculator, I am making about a third what I would if I were THE SOUL OF EVIL, oops, I mean a CEO. I like the idea about the "if I were a Labor Union Leader" calculator.

Perhaps the point escapes you, but it is a fact that the government coerces me into giving them money which they then decide to distribute to others. If a company is paying its execs unnecessarily high salaries that are out of line with other companies in the same line of business, I can elect to make a stink a the shareholders meeting, sell my stock, or buy from another company. One is a choice, one isn't.
However, you ignored my initial point. If "fairness" is so important to the AFL-CIO, why does John Sweeney, Richard Trumka, et.al. make so much more money that the people they represent?

So you're only a 6 on the 666 scale? Did you play the greed game? You have to drag the little cars on to the spot to make it work. parsy.

You are missing a major point. CEO's get the big bucks because they work very hard for it. They have many peoples jobs in their hands, and that kind of responsibility need to be compensated. With your kind of thinking, a General in the Army and the buck private would be paid the same. I don't think the military would be very effective like that.
Naa, I won't check it, either.

"I can elect to make a stink a the shareholders meeting"
Well, mebbe you can and mebbe you can't. Are you aware that a stockholder can not necessarily get certain things to the table at a board meeting??? (Unlike Japan, unless they changed.) parsy.

You are forcing a false comparison. The true comparison is what these guys would make on their own not what I get paid.

Actually, the wage gap between a private and a general is far, far less than between workers and CEOs. That is one reason why our miltary has such good morale and is so effective. Some countries, though, pay/endow their generals more like CEOs and those countries, coincidentally seem to have lousy armies. Like Iraq. parsy.

Somehow, even though I am pretty "conservativeIn any case, I cannot recall one conservative issue you agree with. Remember when I told you you should change to dem party that you would be more comfortable ? You should change your description of yourself. You will be more comfortable as a liberal.

1996 Annual Pay: 1/100
Wow! Would YOU Be in Luck!
Today you would be making an amazing $3 a year if your pay had grown as much in the past five years as an average CEOs pay.
Sounds great, doesnt it? But thats nothing compared with what you would be earning five years from now if that amount of pay kept growing the way a CEOs compensation does.
In 2005 you would get paid $7!!

Thanks, I played. Worth it for the amusement value:
"The biggest gains you could have made in this game were when you formed a union and earned dignity and respect on the job"
Good to know that. When I was a member of the UFCW (grocery store clerk), as a part time worker I got the "dignity and respect" of paying 10 bucks a month out of my measly paycheck so that the full time workers could get benefits. Nothing like robbing the poor to help the less poor, huh? And of course when they did strike, the full timers (and the local union goons, this is in WV, after all) screamed at and threatened the part timers who kept working because the union wouldn't give them a dime. Ah, the brotherhood of the working class. It touched my very heart.

"I cannot recall one conservative issue you agree with"
I support the 2nd Amendment. I believe in the death penalty, in theory. I am against most gov't interference in business. I think gov't is too big and powerful. I think power should be reserved to the people. I think the lazy poor ought to be put to work. I think strip clubs are sinful. I think Hugh Hefner is a pimp. I can't stand Bill Clinton and think he should have been impeached. I think Jesse Jackson is a clown. Gee, should I continue?
Where I part company from most conservatives, is that I think big business is darn near as bad as big gov't. I think the people should be allowed to sue big companies. I think minimum wages should be up around $8.00. I think most businessmen share the same mental make-up as criminals and welfare-recipients. I am not so sure the rich are being taxed too much, and indeed, tend to think they ought to be taxed more. I think there should be a 100% estate tax for most rich folks. I am not torqued out by homos, blacks, and poor folks. etc. parsy.

How do you balance this
I am against most gov't interference in business. I think gov't is too big and powerful. I think power should be reserved to the people.
With this
I think minimum wages should be up around $8.00. I think there should be a 100% estate tax for most rich folks.

And given your belief on non-interference how do you attack this problem
is that I think big business is darn near as bad as big gov't

How about "Calculate Your Own Pay If You Were a Labor Union Leader!" somehow i doubt their pay has risen as interestingly as ceo's.

The gov't doesn't have to get real involved in these things. Just set the rates and enforce. Compare this to say, getting a 404 Wetlands permit. Or SEC compliance. Or going thru a DOT audit. Minwage, in particular, is very non-intrusive. How many gov't agents does it take and how much face-to-face? Not much. parsy.
