The director of such movie classics as "M.A.S.H." and "Nashville" doesn't think much of the country that made him rich and famous, especially in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Robert Altman, who's now in London making his next flick "Gosford Park,", is telling just about any British reporter who will listen how much he hates the U.S. - and especially President Bush.
"We've got a president who won the election because of accountants and money men," he said in a magazine interview previewed last week in London's Express newspaper.
"We've got a war going on to protect their oil interests," the celebrated moviemaker continued complaining. "Wherever you go in America there is nothing but flags. The Americans are so full of it."
The director continued his rant in the Times of London yesterday, bellyaching, "When I see an American flag flying, it's a joke,"
"This present government in America I just find disgusting, the idea that George Bush could run a baseball team successfully - he can't even speak! I just find him an embarrassment."
Altman's comments to the Times were picked up by the New York Post Tuesday, which also noted that Altman's anti-American feeling is so strong, he's thinking of moving to London for good.
"I'd be very happy to stay here. There's nothing in America that I would miss at all," the Bush-bashing movieman concluded.
Total, complete and utter DITTO.
His so-called masterpiece - "M*A*S*H", bored me to near tears. And what was with Elliot Gould wearing that '70's Biker Bar moustache? That capped it for me.
My x was an xtra in that immortal Altmann film "Health". Made in the '70's soon after Altman was flush with the success of MASH.
She said he was a nut.
I think he has it backwards. There is nothing America will miss about him.
In the words of George Jefferson, "Don't let the doorknob hit ya, where the good Lord split ya." (It's not everyday that you get to quote George Jefferson)
The liar would miss the $$$ from American theaters.
Unfortunately, I already saw it last week, so I can't boycott it. (It was really good, not his usual drivel...)
I've never understood Hollyweird types in this regard. I mean, they're free to be 'Rats and all that and hold whatever whacko-liberal positions they want, but they invariably go on some kind of anti-Republican rant and thus insult at least half of the audience they hope will view their productions. That's not a very smart thing to do. But, then again, expecting smarts from these people may be a bit much to ask...
Interview It's no walk in the park BY STEPHEN DALTON. The Times (London) 1-21-02
Lighten up, junior.
I stand corrected, as I didn't have time to read the entire article. I was merely focusing on the time frame given that the report stated that Altman was making "Gosford Park" and I could have gone to my local theater a week and a half ago to see the finished movie. (and could have seen it in Manhattan long before that.)
I never disputed that Altman was a jerk. However, this is still sloppy reporting.
"We've got a Preident who won the election because of accountants and money men."
MISSING:
What accountants? As in names.
What was their part in this matter? How did accounts sway the Supreme court?
What money men? As in names.
What part did they play in swaying the Supreme court's ruling?
These questions are really posted to any Democrat who can answer these simple questions without using the words "I think that" or "I fell that.
