Homosexual customs return to Kandahar

SUMMARY: Taliban rule is over in Kandahar, Afghanistan (news - web sites), and Western journalists have already noted that traditions of homosexuality are re-emerging.

Taliban rule is over in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and Western journalists have already noted that traditions of homosexuality are re-emerging.

Kandahar's Pashtuns have started to become visible again with their "ashna" -- teenagers who are groomed for sex. Before the Taliban took over in 1994, Pashtuns could be seen everywhere with their young boys on whom they showered expensive gifts. Living in poverty, the boys could not refuse the Pashtuns.

Once a boy becomes the property of a Pashtun, who is usually married with a wife and family, he is marked out. The Kandaharis, however, accept Pashtun relationships as part of their culture. Pashtun and their ashna "beloveds" have been part of everyday life for centuries.

"In the days of the Mujahidin, there were men with their ashna everywhere, at every corner, in shops, on the streets, in hotels: It was completely open, a part of life," Torjan, 38, one of the soldiers loyal to Kandahar's new governor, Gul Agha Sherzai, told the Times newspaper.

"They are just emerging again," Torjan said. "The fighters too now have the boys in their barracks. This was brought to the attention of Gul Agha, who ordered the boys to be expelled, but it continues. The boys live with the fighters very openly. In a short time, and certainly within a year, it will be like pre-Taliban: They will be everywhere."

I'm sure he will. Here is his latest contribution to his liberal theory:

thank you for drawing all the lines. Let me see if I get this: You have a THEORY which says people will lose their jobs if the minwage goes up. You draw lines and show what your THEORY looks like graphically. Then you say this PROVES your THEORY.

Leave aside the fact that several STUDIES, like the one in New Jersey a few years ago, make your THEORY questionable. For my benefit, could you draw some lines for me. Start with an X & Y axis. At some point draw a horizontal line which intersects the Y axis. Let's use 4. Label that line "minwage".(I like your number.) Somewhere above "4" draw a line parallel to the first one. Lets use a variable like "Z" for the point on the Y axis. Label that line "Average minimum cost to live."

Now draw some of those cute little two-ended arrows between the 2 lines. Label that area "What the taxpayers have to pay to subsidize cheap, greedy, stingy, businesses."

Then follow the link to my fair wage primer for some real math. Also see my Nickel and Dimed Thread. Thanks, parsy.

Nothing about the above graph is "theory" but rather fact. This idea of miminum wage holds if the following assumptions are made:

When I saw the title to this I thought it was announcing the arrival of a new US ambassador.

And you're lucky at that. I was concerned that it had to do with afirmitive-action hiring from the gay community for their airport immigration inspectors, and might be related to the manner in which arriving passengers would be probed.

As if this behavior is not present, in some degree, in all cultures/countries.
