Lookie here - envirowhacko federal workers are caught defrauding the people and they get a slap on the wrist. They should be arrested, charged and put on trial. I wonder how many other so-called studies have been rigged?

Second thought? All of us who live in WA state should be writing to the Seattle Times to ask why they didn't consider this newsworthy. Tell them it's just another reason why their readership is slumping - they don't do the news unless it fits their agenda.

the employees said they were not trying to manipulate or expand the lynx habitat, but instead were testing the lab's ability to identify the cat species through DNA analysis

Sheese. They should be fired just for trying to pass off the lamest excuse ever conceived.

I would like to know a lot more about where organizations like ELF get their funding. In this particular case, it would be interesting to know 1) if the government employees involved belonged to any radical environmental groups, and 2) if they were promised any remuneration or had any other financial interests that would benefit by more restrictive environmental regulations.

When the Vail Ski Resort announced an expansion of trails into possible lynx habitat, the radical animal-rights group Earth Liberation Front (ELF) torched five buildings and four ski lifts in protest. The Oct. 18, 1998, fire caused $12 million in damage and was the largest act of eco-terrorism in the United States. No arrests were made, and the statute of limitations expired in October.

This past summer, ELF planted spikes in hundreds of trees to sabotage a timber sale and protect the lynx and spotted owls in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest — one of the forests where the false samples were planted.

Not only did they commit acts of terrorism, but as it turns out, they based their acts on phony info. I wonder if ELF will now apologize and pay for damages.

And I think I'll watch hell freeze over.

So, these criminals didn't even lose their jobs? And, we don't get to find out their names? What ever happened to accountability?

This (and similar acts by government employees) are no less serious than terrorist acts committed by foreign terrorists. Although the initial body count doesn't match the 9/11 acts, the ongoing damage to American families and the overall economy will affect many millions of people for many years to come.

If these creeps were robbing banks in uniform, would the bureaucrats still protect them from prosecution and publicity? According to above reasoning, the answer is yes.

In a sense, they have robbed more than banks. They have stolen the potential to create wealth from the timber, mining, and ranching industries, and by extension, from all the individuals who depended on those industries for their livlihood.

They should be hanged.

However, the incident has damaged the integrity of the federal agencies within their own ranks and in the communities they serve.

I think I'm gonna cry! The integrity of bureaucrats...damaged! OH NO!

Retired Fish and Wildlife Service biologist James M. Beers called the false sampling amazing but not surprising.
"I'm convinced that there is a lot of that going on for so-called higher purposes," Mr. Beers said.

And up to now such criminal activity has been cost-free.
This kind of righteous higher-purspose BS affects millions and costs billions. It is not a trivial crime.

I hope that the punishment goes far beyond these dimwits losing their jobs. About 10 years sounds right.
Time to send a clear and unambiguous message.

Mr. Gordon said the false sampling aggravates an already distrustful relationship between Westerners anyone with a brain and the federal government.

The employees have been counseled for their actions and banned from participating in the three-year survey of the lynx, listed as a threatened animal under the Endangered Species Act. Federal officials would not name the offending employees, citing privacy concerns.

Totally inadequate. These people abused their authority. They should be fired and prosecuted. Unfortunately Clinton/Babbett packed these agencies with environmental extremists. I suggest we start a letter writing campaign to get Gail Norton to fire these people.

""This revelation makes all the projects these offices and individuals were involved in suspect, and may merit review," Mr. Gordon said."

Let's not let these wacko, enviro-nazis lefty's and the bureaucrats that boy clinton and algore enrolled in attacking our right's, get away with it !!
