No longer 'Just Say No': Bush says quit drugs and fight terrorism

By Associated Press, 12/14/2001 13:52

WASHINGTON (AP) President Bush said Friday that drug users aid terrorists who get their money from global trafficking in narcotics. ''If you quit drugs, you join the fight against terrorism,'' he said.

Bush offered a new argument in the fight against drugs while signing a bill to expand a federal anti-drug program over the next five years.

''Drug abuse threatens everything, everything that is best about our country,'' he said. ''It breaks the bond between parent and child. It turns productive citizens into addicts. It transforms schools into places of violence and chaos. It makes playgrounds into crime scenes. It supports gangs at home.''

''And abroad, it's important for Americans to know that trafficking of drugs finances the world of terror, sustaining terrorists,'' the president said. The administration has linked the al-Qaida network in Afghanistan to heroin trafficking. The terrorist group, led by Osama bin Laden, is suspected in the Sept. 11 attacks on America.

The bill signed by Bush expands the Drug-Free Communities Support Program, which helps community groups reduce illegal drugs. The program's budget is about $50 million, and would almost double in five years under the bill.

''Over time, drugs rob men, women and children of their dignity and of their character,'' Bush said.

''Illegal drugs are the enemies of ambition and hope and when we fight against drugs we fight for the souls of our fellow Americans.''

Your entire debating technique boils down to a constant repitition of some variation of "Because I say so."

Can't you pull out a "I know you are, but what am I?", just to spice things up every once in a while?

Sure they do, George. Why, just the other day I saw a marijuana plant snatch a woman's purse, take the shirt right off a kid's back, and forcibly extract all of the rationality from the leader of the free world. It must be the new high potency strains that are being developed.

Just because one thinks that Pot should be legal does not make one a Libertarian, do a search on any of my posts and it will be painfully obvious that I'm not a Libertarian & I don't think that Pot should be illegal, but than again I don't support legalization of Narcotics like this thread starts off with.

I've been watching What About Bob? for quite a while now. He's not really here to discuss, just to disrupt and insult. He'll never respond to a rational argument, he'll just stick to his attacks. Don't even bother with him - he's even worse than Dane or Kevin Curry.

Wouldn't it be a kick in the butt if the U.S. ended up being the only country supporting terrorism through Prohibition?

I was thinking about moving to Denver sometime next year. Is it really that bad there? I currently live in Louisiana, where corruption is the norm.

How can we undermine drug profits, decrease drug usage, and help those hooked on drugs? Anyone?

Reduce the demand. Change the culture. Get the facts out that drugs are not benign entities and that drugs are for losers.

Nope, just corrupt cops and politicians. We know all about that here in Denver, don't we?

I think any state except Arkansas would be an improvement in corruption over Louisiana. M1991 can give you more details about Denver than I can, I've only lived here a couple of years.

Almost everyone who has worked with adolescents can see the damage drugs (both legal and illegal) do to the independence, aspirations, and accomplishments of kids.

People tend to see things in terms of their own circle of acquaintances. You must be in an environment where people don't see the negatives of drugs as outweighing any kick one derives from their use.

See the kind of reasoning drugs can lead to? Heaven help us!

I hear you. I don't want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. I have an old Navy buddy that already lives there, but he hasn't mentioned anything about corruption. Maybe I'll ask him for more details.

"...he's even worse than Dane or Kevin Curry."

Okay, put down the bong. ;^)

He's a piker compared to those two.

For one thing, although 'thicker', he's less persistant.

And he rarely threatens terrorism on dissidents!
