The Big Media crackup: Joseph Farah shows why independent news sources are thriving
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | Friday, December 14, 2001 | Joseph Farah

Yes, it's finally happening, people. The Big Media are imploding.

It is this latest development – the phenomenon of Bill O'Reilly that I want to focus on today.

The Big Media are not going to go down easy. They are not going to go away without a fight. And Big Government will do all in its power to keep "safe" TV journalism alive and ticking for as long as it can.

That's why O'Reilly is under attack. I make that statement advisedly. It is not rhetorical overkill. They are all coming after him with guns blazing – because he represents a real threat to the media "statist quo," sometimes called, in these parts, the "government-media complex."

Now, I don't agree with Bill O'Reilly all the time. Sometimes I disagree with him vehemently. As I have said many times before, I think O'Reilly has way too much trust in Big Government to fix things.

But, here's the point: Never before in the recent history of the Big Media has there been a guy who cannot be controlled. That's O'Reilly's key to success – and it's also the reason he represents such a threat.

He's unpredictable – just as journalists are supposed to be. He is unafraid – just as journalists are supposed to be. He cannot be intimidated – even by his own network.

The O'Reilly phenomenon should give us great hope – not because he is going to save us, but because his success illustrates that we can break through the media monopoly and get the truth to the American people.

WorldNetDaily is another success story in that way.

Now, far and away the largest independent news service on the Internet, it is making believers of those who wondered whether "a free press for a free people" would ever be seen in America again.

I hear from some of the very top news executives in the country – people whose names you would recognize, people who command mega-billion-dollar media empires. You know what they tell me? They read WorldNetDaily. They like it. They envy it. They recognize the simple formula we use to reach our growing audience of millions. They see its value. Some are threatened by it, but others are seeking ways to harness it, use it, get their hands around it.

No, we'll never sell out. WorldNetDaily is going to grow and prosper by sticking to its core vision – independently.

We're going to take America and the world by storm. We're going to spread truth far and wide. We're going to break through the media monopoly not by complaining about it, not by asking government help, but through old-fashioned competition.

Are you with me?

"OK," you're probably saying. "I'm with you. But how can I help? What can I do."

You're already doing part of the work – reading WorldNetDaily and getting your news from a new, independent source. The next step is supporting that news source through online purchases of books, videos and other products offered by WorldNetDaily. Yes, that's the way we support this enterprise. Some 80 percent of our revenues are derived by our online store, ShopNetDaily.

You can also help us greatly by signing up for our free daily news alerts, which combine breaking headlines and commercial messages. If you haven't done so already, please do so right now.

And, lastly, let me ask those of you who believe in miracles to pray for the success of WorldNetDaily and the few other independent voices blazing new trails in the media wilderness. I don't believe there can be a return to the American values of our founders without such common-sense voices.

I don't even watch the networks anymore. I'll drink to their memories if and when they go the way of the buffalo. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I like FreeRepublic's formula even more--and by a long shot.

The members here give insights the professionals miss, often.

If it's important, I know it'll be here, from anywhere in the world, as soon as it's published.

WND is good, but FR is the best of the best.

When I watch the TV news or read webnews, I yell at the screen and nobody hears. Here, I yell; and the screen yells back!

Amen Bump especially to dasboot's reply...

FR is the BEST of all. I think most of us will agree it is like using a commentary/news/intelligence service roled into one. News is fast and accurate and the majority of the posts also give great replys and commentary that really helps to bring perspective to the facts.

Big media is imploding, reason: People can get more of what they want to hear somewhere else, and FOX is going strong because it panders to those with a conservative bias.

Why take it any easier on FOX for having a conservative bias than we do on CBS for having a liberal bias? Isn't bias of any sort counter-productive to getting a clear picture of what's really going on in the world? How can FOX be considered an "independent" news source when it's owned by media technocrat Rupert Murdoch?

We should not be demanding more FOX, we should be demanding more pure, unbiased coverage of national and world events. I'm way too old to be praising a news station as "accurate" just because it tells me what I want to hear.

Sometimes getting toasted is good therapy.

Like T. Jefferson intimated (paraphrased): errors of the mind are best discovered in the heat of a good debate.

An intellectual spanking hurts, but it doesn't kill me: just inspires the brain to work before the mouth...or fingers do.

FOX tilts barely right.

Murdoch is not a conservative.

When will the other networks at least admit their biases?? George Stephonopolous as ABC's next anchor, top reporter?

Remember ABC on election night?? All liberals... some balance... couldn't even wheel in George Will.
