The article assumes that memory is stored in the brain, possibly in the neo-cortex. There is no evidence to support that assertion. There is no need to make such an assertion. Consider that memory is a process of analysis, comparison, and synthesis, not something stored.

If memory isn't stored in the brain, then where is it? Yes, "memory" is a process of analysis, comparison and synthesis, but there has to be something to analyze, compare and synthesize -- so where is it? Also keep in mind that head trauma sometimes leads to memory loss.

These findings point to some limitations in using stem cells to replace neural deficits. New cells will not "take" in an area which will normally not accept neurons via neurogenesis.

Just BTW, your network based idea of memory is belied by the fact that specific clusters of neurons with very specific gene expression and proteins are responsible for selected cognitive functions.

Everything that falls under the heading "mental" such as feeling and thinking is ultimately the result of biochemical reactions and physical structures within the brain. The brain is merely an organ that secretes thought.
