Thanks for taking the time to do this. Great history for the newbies, and a refresher for the rest of us. Are you thinking of writing a book, Jim?

Thank You for the information summary.
I tried to go to some of the complaint letters and none them were found on the server. Must have hicup in the link.

Actually, I have discovered that there apparently is "good copyright infringement" and "bad copyright infringement". Free Republic is guilty of "bad copyright infringement", which of course is indiscernible from "good copyright infringement", except if you examine the political leanings of the sites under consideration. ;-)

Please write us a book Jim.
A comprehensive review from POTFR would be nice.

bump.

Folks, this unfolding story is one big reason that I donate to FR. We need to support the good fight and break the monopoly that the liberal media has on information. The first amendment is for all, not just for the LA Times, Washington Post, and the rest of the socialists.

Good job, Jim. This is all very interesting background. I particularly liked the old Drudge story!
Now I'm off to do some bookmarking.
Best wishes,
Silly

Jim, do you think that a major FReep of WP and LAT would be in order, or would it be counterproductive?
The reason I ask is, perhaps their boards of directors and readers should know how people feel about it. I wouldn't suggest that FReepers do anything if you objected; but I think at this point they really need to just drop their suits and get lost. They will get nowhere.

Thanks for the history, Jim. I didn't realize that the big dogs were after you in late '97 and early '98. Maybe that's why I found this web site around that time, as a lurker.
Keep up the great work, and never, never, never give in!

Good job.

Tnanks for the explanation and recap, for those of us who weren't around when it all began.

I'm a relative old-timer. I've heard this tune a million times; I've seen the rebuttals; I've carefully analyzed all the positions.
I fall on your side of the fence. The persecution you've endured is selective in its 'enforcement' and is incorrect in its application. You will win in practice, your creation will go on and you will always be at its helm. You go, Jim. In the meantime I'll help in any way I can. Rock on, bud.

To: Jim Robinson
Brian stated that we (Brian was a poster too) on Free Republic are operating squarely within our rights under the U.S. Constitution and the fair use provisions of Copyright Law. He volunteered his pro bono legal services to Free Republic and me personally and vowed to never, ever surrender, and that we would continue fighting the good fight until victory! Jim,
Did you not understand the risk you were taking by taking such an agressive posture on full-text posting and fair use? Did Brian not explain this to you?
Just wondering.
