WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate voted overwhelmingly Friday to block U.S. participation in a new international criminal court that opponents fear could stage politically motivated trials of American troops and government officials.
The 78-21 vote added the language, introduced by Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., to this year's defense spending bill.
The Helms provision's ultimate fate is unclear. The House version of the defense spending bill contains no such provision, but in May, the House voted 282-137 to include similar language in a separate bill authorizing State Department programs.

"How will the Libertarians spin this as another example of the New World Order.."
Are you implying there is NO new order, no global governance? I hope you're kidding because everyone but you is talking about it.

america is the first nation to push the ICTY crap and yet do not want the ICC!
u.s. = double standards!
until the u.s. abolishes support for the war crimes tribunal like the ICTY, they better fess up and support the ICC!
america = waffling as usual!
NO ICC MEANS NO ICTY PERIOD! cannot have it both ways!

We have the sovereign right to act in defense of our own interests unilaterally, period.
On his deathbed, John Adams called together his beloved family, and proposed a final toast...his words ring down through history..."Independence forever!"
Seems to me that the War for Independence continues to this day.

No on the ICC. Never never never... Amen.

Thank God for Jesse. Geez...both my Senators voted "no." That would be Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray. I am so ashamed. Of course I didn't vote for either one. Beginning to think that we have the single worst duo in the Senate.

"...an unaccountable kangaroo court." Hmmm. Sounds like a description of Bush's military tribunals. Of course, these will be our unaccountable kangaroo courts. :)
Okay, all you crypto-fascists out there, turn on your flame throwers!

I am sorry for you. The ironic thing is in my state even old Ron Wyden (who is perceived by morons as being moderate in Oregon) voted for it. That totally blew me away. Smith occasionally is bad but he supported it also. I never would have imagined both of my senators supporting this. But seeing both senators from New York supporting it does not make it that big of a deal but I will take what I can get.

Feinstein and Boxer. I rest my case! Throw in Hillary and you've got the Devil's Trifecta!

A strange side note: Even Hitlery Clinton voted with Helms.Perhaps she is trying to clean up her history of chastising anything military; softening her activist image; for whatever reason, you can bet your sweet life she voted for reasons pertaining to self!

Way out here on the Left Coast, as a subject of the People's Soviet of Washington (CCCB - the nearest you get to 'W' in Russian is "Bh", as I recall)....." Closest would be CBCP ( Soiuz Vashingtonskixh Sotzialisticheskixh Respublik), everything after the first word in genative plural case. Russian has two kinds of sh sounds, represented by a rounded W and a rounded W with a sort of a little kick on the lower right, the latter pronounced by forcing air over the tongue rather than under it..

I assume this means we're also going to insist that the Kangaroo apparatus in the Hague free Slobodan Milosevic (who'se basically on trial for the war crime of trying to defend his nation from narco-terrorists and international gangsters). I mean, nobody admires hypocrisy.
