Speaking of the murder of more than two dozen Israeli civilians last weekend by what one wire service called "Islamic militants," Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld correctly and unequivocally said on NBC's "Meet the Press": "The only way to defend against terrorists is to go after the terrorists."

Sadly, it shouldn't be our call whether Israel should defend itself. Why do they need our permission.

They'll realize that when they get pushed too far and act on their own for their survival. And they'll be right to do so.

If we had not stopped them from attacking Iraq ten years ago, all hell would have broken loose in the middle east. One of the best accomplishments from the Bush Sr. team was that they were able to hold Israel back.

That was a different situation in wartime in which we and many other nations were directly involved. And we weren't hanging the Israelis out to dry, we aided them in their defense.

Let the Arab states cut off our oil. We can walk or ride horses. We can burn wood for heat in winter.

I agree with everything except this part. If they cut off our oil, we shouldn't go back to horses. We should just take "their" oil, which is really only theirs for as long as they can defend it -- Just like they perceive Israel is only for the Jews as long for as the Jews can defend it. When they recognize other people's rights, that's when we will recognize theirs. We have appeased the Arabs for too long in this any many other regards. It's their turn to start appeasing.

We should just take "their" oil, which is really only theirs for as long as they can defend it...

The oil rigs belong to us (at least in Saudi Arabia), and our military defends the oil fields. I wouldn't worry about the U.S. being "denied" oil from the Middle East.

It sounds and looks like Isreal wants to help us in some very real ways in our WAR on Terrorism. When we are done in Afganistan we can head west. They can clear out Palestine and start into Syria. We will meet somewhere around where the Euphaties and the Tigris join together.
