Has anyone received this message via Microsoft Outlook? If it is opened, it regenerates and copies people in your address book. I am not including the .scr file because I do not know the ramifications associated with this file. I know, I don't use Microsoft Outlook at home, but at work it is our only option. If anyone has additional information regarding this latest mess with Microsoft Outlook, please post your information. Thanks.......

Once again, another virus/trojan alert on Free Republic because a conservative is 'too cheap' to buy a Mac... I can't use a Mac. I'm a heterosexual.
To: WIMom
you're welcome.
this just in - Symantech has not finished releasing the 12/4 virus definitions.
To: WIMom
Typical "exploit".
Okie's got a tude, so ignore. You can get really good info on Symantec at SANS.
But you really should change your Outlook settings so that new messages are not "Previewed". Good luck.

Thanks. Running MS and PC is a way of life. Business is conducted using it. Beta was a better VCR, but what happened?

Create a folder called Attachments.
Create a rule that sends all messages containing attachments to the Attachments folder
Turn off Preview Pane on the Attachments folder.
To: softengine
Thanks, I don't use preview, but I'm sure there are a couple users here who do. (hehehe, probably sales......) I will let the gang here know.

I recently tried installing Linux on my PC at home. This, after checking to make sure that my hardware was compatable. I saved all my files, reformatted the hard drive, etc. So, we're talking about a clean installation.
But, I wanted the Lin4win version, which is Linux that operates within a windows environment. Too many apps that haven't been written for LInux yet to completely switch....So, I reinstalled windows 98 first, then tried to install the Lin4win Mandrake ver 8.1 (newest version).
It wouldn't install. It kept stalling or coming back with a message about "failing to loop back" on the hard drive, whatever that means. Perhaps I bit off more than I could chew on this one. So, I gave up for now. Any thoughts?

What I've never understood is why people open attachments on an e-mail from people they don't know? This is how all this gets started!
As for e-mails apparently sent by someone you do know (but in reality was generated by such vulnerabilities on a firend's computer, and sent to you under your friend's e-mail), I can't believe that someone would just assume that a freind of theirs would just send a file out of the blue, without telling them first, or at least using some personally identifiying info in the letter like:
"Hi John, this is your good buddy Dave! Give this file a try, it's cool!"
Now of course I don't condone the use of "viruses" and the like; I think they're the product of a misguided teen or pre-teen's mind. However, if you don't use some common sense in handling e-mail, well, some might say you "Got what you deserved".

Pardon moi! Works for an employer that is 'too cheap' to buy its employees Macs. Boy you cheap conservatives are really sensitive about your knock-off computers and operating systems.

I have that going. I pretty much have myself covered, but it's the other users that need some training. I just started this position a month ago. Being the only engineer/manager in the company, they are asking me all sorts of question, and IS isn't my speciality. And on top of this, the woman who is the 'designated' IS person broke her elbow last week and is out for a couple more weeks. I love the small company atmosphere, we get to do so much interesting things......All this advice is wonderful.

I can't use a Mac. I'm a heterosexual. So Rush Limbaugh is a flaming homosexual? Did you know that majority, if not all, people caught trafficing child pornography on the Internet use PCs! By your logic, that must make you a fan of kiddie smut! :P

You're living in a dream world. There are Mac virus's and they're nasty. You don't see them that often because most people hate Macs.
To: Roebucks
No, but I will forward your questions. Check your mail....

Looks like a mutation of a virus I got a little while ago. Basic rule for email that's always true: If you get an attachment from someone you don't know - DON'T OPEN IT. Never, ever, ever, under any circumstances. It's like taking candy from strangers. The billions of dollars that would be saved by this country if everyone followed this simple rule would be staggering.
