November 25, 2001 -- The FBI is close to making the first arrests on U.S. soil directly linked to the Sept. 11 World Trade Center terror attacks, The Post has learned.
The arrests could be in New York City, possibly within days but certainly within two weeks, sources say.

"These are not material witnesses," one law-enforcement source said.
"They facilitated the attack. They aided and abetted the hijackers."

"These are not material witnesses," one law-enforcement source said. "They facilitated the attack. They aided and abetted the hijackers. I do hope that this is true.

The FBI doesn't let this kind of information "leak out" unless they have a strategic reason for it. Patience, glasshoppa.

The arrests could be in New York City, possibly within days but certainly within two weeks, sources say. Is this information helpful to either law enforcement or the public?
NO!
Maybe President Bush should review the British policy called the "D notice," which prohibits the media from releasing information that is detrimental to ongoing investigations that impact national security. Our free press is endangering our freedom for the sake of a scoop.

I truly hope that one of the facilitators turns out to be the retired professor who housed two of the hi-jackers and rented rooms in his house to several other "material witnesses" still in custody.

Our free press is endangering our freedom for the sake of a scoop. Why blame the press? They are only printing what they've been fed by the Fed. Certainly the Fed has some purpose in releasing this information.

I truly hope that one of the facilitators turns out to be the retired professor... Probably from Berkley.

Nope, San Diego. Lemon Grove to be exact. The old b@stard keeps bragging to the U-T reporters that "he is not a suspect" and so far the FBI has let him get away with his denials. An outrage IMHO. How could he have housed 2 hi-jackers and a total of five other "material witnesses" and not known a thing!

President Bush is not the Queen.

Meanwhile, the Immigration and Naturalization Service yesterday announced the arrest of a Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad sympathizer in Tampa, Fla., on charges he violated his visa. Mazen al Najjar, who helped raise money for the anti-Israel and anti-U.S. groups, was ordered deported by the U.S. 11th Circuit court in Atlanta. Is that what happened to A+bert?

They look good together,dont they?

I think the authorities are trying to panic the leaders of bin Laden's organization. La Repubblica was reporting yesterday that codebooks of al Qaeda were captured in Kabul.

It's hard to see the benefit of this kind of information getting out to the public, but then again I'm not exactly Lt. Kojak, so I don't know. It just makes me nervous it'll tip off the wrong people and thwart the investigation. I hope you're right that this was intentional.
