It is commonplace to assume that toppling the Taliban will free Afghan women. But in an unstable country where soldiers celebrate conquest by raping, women have to protect themselves to remain free. Afghan women need to exercise the right of self-defense, including gun ownership.

I am. The subject of your overly-simplified comments concerning this article. I really don't want to argue with you, but the reality for these women is not as simple as you would have it seem.
The article is about the Afghan women, not the Afghan men.
It would have required the cooperation of men, but if this women was educated in fighting the Russians what stopped her when the Taliban came to power?
If there is such a thing as a Radical Muslim and a Moderate Muslim, what kept the Radicals from becoming victims of the Moderates instead of the other way around?
Exactly my point. And I'll repeat, I was making observations on your comment in comparison to reality, not the article alone.
but if this women was educated in fighting the Russians what stopped her when the Taliban came to power?
Overpowered? Out numbered? Concern for family? Many things could have played a factor. We all have instincts to survive. Sometimes we have to wait to gain the power to break free under more favorable circumstances.
Oh, and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Thanksgiving is never a 'happy' time for the turkey. ;^)

The reality, of course, is that a gun is merely a tool, with limited effectiveness. Sometimes all the use of a weapon in self defense can do is to get you killed. After all, look how well their guns protected the Davidians at Waco.
If overwhelming military force is controlled by your enemies, all fighting back will get you is dead. A case can certainly be made that it is better to die as a free man (or woman) than to live as a slave. But those making such a choice should be under no illusions that this is exactly the choice they are making.
I remember this argument, and it is a good one. But in THIS situation I think that, were the majority of women given weapons there would be a completely different scenario over there. It would not be a group holed up in a compound fighting against a powerful government with huge, advanced, militarized agencies at their disposal.
In some situations I agree completely with your point, but not in all.
I am wasting my time. But more, I think, because there is so little chance of what this article proposes happening.
