Death from Strange Causes

Æs’chylus was killed by the fall of a tortoise on his bald head from the claws of an eagle in the air. (Valerius Maximus, ix. 12, and Pliny: History, vii. 7.)

Agath’ocles (4 syl.), tyrant of Sicily, was killed by a toothpick at the age of ninety-five.

Anac’reon was choked by a grapestone. (Pliny: History, vii. 7.)

Bassus (Quintus Lucnus) died from the prick of a needle in his left thumb.

Chalchas, the soothsayer, died of laughter at the thought of having outlived the predicted hour of his death.

Charles VIII., of France, conducting his queen into a tennis-court, struck his head against the lintel, and it caused his death.

Fab’ius, the Roman prætor, was choked by a single goat-hair in the milk which he was drinking. (Pliny: History, vii. 7.)

Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales, died from the blow of a cricket-ball.

Gallus (Cornelius), the prætor, and Titus Haterus, a knight, each died while kissing the hand of his wife.

Gabrielle (La belle), the mistress of Henri IV., died from eating an orange.

Itadach died of thirst in the harvestfield because (in observance of the rule of St. Patrick) he refused to drink a drop of anything.

Lep’idus (Quintus Æm’ilius), going out of his house, struck his great toe against the threshold and expired.

Louis VI. met with his death from a pig running under his horse and causing it to stumble.

Margutte died of laughter on seeing a monkey trying to pull on a pair of boots.

Otway, the poet, in a starving condition, had a guinea given him, on which he bought a loaf of bread, and died while swallowing the first mouthful.

Pamphilius (Cnevus Babius), a man of prætorian rank, died while asking a boy what o’clock it was.

Philom’enes (4 syl.) died of laughter at seeing an ass eating the figs provided for his own dessert. (Valerius Maximus.)

Placut (Phillipot) dropped down dead while in the act of paying a bill. (Bacaberry the Elder.)

Quenelault, a Norman physician, of Montpellier, died from a slight wound made in his hand in extracting a splinter.

Saufeius (Appius) was choked to death supping up the white of an under-boiled egg. (Pliny: History, vii. 33.)

Torqua’tus (Aulus Manlius), a gentleman of consular rank, died in the act of taking a cheesecake at dinner.

Valla (Lucius Tuscius), the physician, died in the act of taking a draught of medicine.

William III. died from his horse stumbling over a mole-hill.

Zeuxis, the great painter, died of laughter at sight of a hag which he had just depicted.

* It will be observed that four of the list died of laughter. No doubt the reader will be able to add other examples.

Don't social security checks come from washington .d.c.

Excellent thought, might even explain the women in NY. Interesting to know if she got regular mail from DC.

Beats me... the only things that seem (on the surface) to make sense are either A) Medical Supplies, and B) Mail... beyond that, I'm at a loss to explain, unless this woman is merely the first in what could be another batch of people (it was an old guy that died first in florida, too)...

Hard not to notice, isn't it?

Makes me think that a leftie would do it and try to blame the VRWC. Can anyone say, "Unabomber?" Look for another Kacinski(sp?).

No. I believe the checks are sent from regional offices. Waterbury has a SS office right there. I could be wrong, but they aren't coming from DC.

Oxford has an airport. From the photos, it looks small and rural.

Remember something, though, foreigners who watch TV, see RATS on tv more than repubs, plus, in the last 8 years, who were the 'heros' of tv? RATS. So, it makes perfect sense to me to see rATS get the hate mail first, for it is they who passed the most laws, got the most attention, and were the most exposed.

[Vanity alert-could turn out to be circumstantial]

At my home in CT, I noticed a strange business-type letter about 2 weeks ago. I noticed that it was from Baltimore, so I figured it had probably been through DC at some point. Not knowing who it was from, I threw it out without opening it. Anyone else with the same experience?

However, the letter was not a handwritten job; it was a mass mailing. But it was from Baltimore.

Not all, my kids still get theirs in the mail, and they still have those darn open windows in the envelopes.

Sarah's medical supplies idea seems like a promising avenue for investigation, but there are other ways of delivering it. Last month, for instance, I suggested that perhaps someone was slipping it between the pages of womens' magazines alongside one of those fragrance inserts. What do most women do when they encounter one of those? Hold them up to their faces and inhale deeply. The mail is a handy delivery system, but there are other ways.

Do you have any idea how many 94 year olds could have died from anthrax in nursing homes? The death of a 94 year old person does not even warrant an autopsy in most cases. The kicker here is that now, everyone who dies of respiratory problems will be an "anthrax" test. Cha-ching for the coroners budgets around the U.S. I don't mean to sound cold-hearted, but there are many issues below the surface. The longer anthrax keeps making it's rounds, the sooner they will catch who-dunit.They have to have a limited supply. If not, they are brewing it up somewhere. That is how they will get caught.

If the whole thing goes away, only to surface again a year later and so on, it will be like trying to catch the unibomber. It may take 20 years. The more activity, the more likely the case is solved.

It was probably just one of zillions of direct marketing pieces that get sent out and thrown away daily by most of us.

Baltimore has their very own real city, with their own real post offices and their very own real distribution points. So, it doesn't necessarily mean that something that's been mailed from baltimore has been in DC. Get out much?
