Save this URL as a bookmark (in your Internet Explorer) named "Free Republic," and you should be able to start up the "pager" window every time you log on to FR.

JohnRob created this (I think) in order to save system resources, with this "pager" you don't need to use the full "self-search" feature anymore.

1) it works

2) it works by making a chime noise, and it turns blue when it's got something for you, otherwise it's white

you can't test it by pinging yourself, it only picks up other peoples' posts to you
