Investigators Find Signs Birdstrike May Have Caused Crash of Flight 587
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 13, 2001 | SCOTT MCCARTNEY

Investigators examining one of the separated engines from American Airlines Flight 587 found foreign debris inside, indicating that the engine may have ingested a flock of birds and then caught on fire.

The engine burned internally, people close to the investigation said. But its parts appeared intact, except for the damage from what is known in aviation as ``foreign object debris,'' or ``FOD.'' That would suggest that the engine didn't suffer a catastrophic failure from some mechanical breakdown, but from sucking in birds, these people said.

I dunno, JB....I'm banking on the thread that said the NJ lotto numbers were 587 yesterday.

fine, but look at a pic of an airbus, and think about centrifugal force of turbine blades radiating axially from the center of the motor, then try to see how these motor parts can travel from thier origin point and force what appears to be a clean shear of the vertical stabilizer...

One witness, a boater, describes an explosion at the wing root, the wing separating, and then the wing knocking off the vertical stabilizer as it departed the aircraft.

Thanks for your response. This illustrates the danger in taking as fact what witnesses claim. If what this witness says happened, happened, how did the engine end up on land if the entire wing broke off at its 'root' and flew off into the tail and into the bay? Wouldn't the engine be in the bay along with the wing and the tail?

It was Les Nessman, not the "Big Guy," who arranged to drop the turkeys on a supermarket parking lot. Instead of flying, they came down like bombs. Les later said, "I thought turkeys could fly." Thanks for the reminder of one of TV's great shows == because of the excellent cast, and the writing that brought out the best in the characters the show created.

Somewhere in the United States, Dr. Johnny Fever is back on the air at a station that just changed its format. He smashes a record in the booth and says, "No more elevator music."

"Red Wigglers, the Cadillac of Worms, Weee-ooo."

Obviously we have no choice but to wait for the gvmt. goons to get their story straight.
There's a lot more to this than meets the eye, in my opinion.

The opinion that you have stated is that anyone who doubts the birdstrike theory is crazy

I have stated nothing of the sort. I have said only that it is premature for you or I to rule in or out such a cause. Since that does not fit your theory, you now resort to name calling. Have a nice day.

I have worked in aviation for 19 years, and know that there are a myriad of things that can bring down an aircraft. I truly believe it was nothing more than a mechanical failure which caused catastrophic structural failure.

It really is as simple as that. But a certain percentage of FR (probably smaller than it seems) is just hellbent on finding a conspiracy SOMEWHERE. Its rather sad, because I find those I know on the left (democrats, commies, and other assorted idiots) resort to conspiracy theories all the time.

I think its ok to idly speculate on conspiracies, I do it all the time. But I think there is a difference between speculating about the possibility of a conspiracy, and much of the conspiracy hunting we see going on here on FR.

I'll admit I'm crazy. It keeps me sane.

This study states that the National Park Service has had a laughing gull nesting program in the park adjacent to the airport. The gull population went from 15 pairs in 1979 to approximately 5-6,000 in 1996. Over those years 1129 of those gulls struck airplanes: "These strikes resulted in 10 incidents that caused damage or delay to aircraft. Of the 10 incidents since 1979, 4 involved damage to at least one engine."

Your tax dollars at work.

Name calling? You have an amazing imagination. I never resort to name calling.
Only ignorant people do that when they can't think of a response.
But I'll give it a try. How's this:

Besides reading things that aren't really there, do you also hear voices, or perhaps have imaginary friends?

I saw this interview too. The retired fireman gave a cogent description of what he saw. IMHO - This man is credible!

According to #269, National Park Service protects Gulls because they hear them laughing.

Agree...maybe the plane injested the birds after the tail fell off...what this spin fails to explain is that the tail came off over the bay, and before the left engine did... quick somebody call Rino Pataki (the gun grabber) maybe he can convinced us the pilot dumped the tail along the fuel..I know he retracted the bonehead remark, but to me this fact about the tail indicates structural failure by ???

However, the government officials that I have seen speak on the matter have been reserved and cautious which is typical during such investigations.

I've been involved in enough accident/incident investigations that not too much surprises me anymore. I've worked with NTSB-(technical)-types before and respect their experience and especially their methodology. What did surprise me was the nature and timing of statements by and in reference to the NTSB. Those were enough for me to raise my eyebrow.

Picture this....
The NTSB has determined flight 587 has been investigated thoughly and the results show a ___ bomb had exploded inside the plane around the area of the left wing, killing all aboard.
There is no reason to feel alarmed.
Our airspace is safe, and have a nice flight.

According to George Black of the NTSB, the only thing suspicious to investigators is the birdcage discovered in one of the engines. Aside from that, it appears to be like "any other" common parakeet species flying in the area.

A lot of people have made comments on what fell off when, and where it wound up. If an engine was lost, and its turbine tore itself apart (regardless of what caused the engine failure itselt -- birds, metalugical failure, sabotage), the flying blades could have escaped the containment cowling. (This has happened before.)

The flying blades then cause damage to whatever they hit, including the tail, the wing, and the fuel tank inside the wing. The damaged engine (or the more damaged engine, if both took a bird strike) falls off the airplane.

You then have two falling parts, the engine and the piece of the tail. Both are moving forward at 200 MPH at the moemnt they come off the plane. Which one will hit the ground at a point closer to the runway? Most likely the tail section.

Do a thought experiment, as Einstein called it. The engine is now basically a rock. The tail section, however, is still an airfoil with a large surface. Momentum will carry the engine forward as it falls. Air resistance will bring the tail section to a halt in the forward direction so it stops moving forward, and falls straight to the ground.

Imagine throwing a metal ball and an aluminum pizza tray at the same time at 200 MPH. The ball will travel farther forward than the tray, though the tray will take longer to hit the ground because wind resistence slows it on the way down, as well as stopping its forward momentum. Got the picture?

The fact that the upright section of the tail wound up in Jamaica Bay and the engine wound up in Rockaway, does not lead to any conclusions about how this aircraft was destroyed. It only demonstrates the difference between the descent of a compact, heavy object and a lighter-weight, large-surface area object from an altitude of 2,000 feet.

I'm just putting in laymen's terms a vigorous discussion of physics from yesterday's main thread. Trust me on this. I was a physics major at Yale until I realized that liberal arts majors had dates on weekends, drank beer, and had lives.

Folks, particularly Colt.45, as bad as this is for your industry and, God forbid, your job, sometimes you just have to admit the unthinkable.

Paradox, the very reason that this forum exists is because it is the last bastion of truth in our age, the information age. Our kind, Freepers/conservatives, have been designated by fate to stand up to tyranny. The left being, of course, the very embodiment of dishonesty, is our primary foe. But their stench permeates our government still. I'm not convinced that GW has the capability of ridding us of that evil quite yet. If you think that the people who are able to see through this concocted BS gov't story are in the minority here, perhaps you need to find a different forum. The fact is, the vast majority of the folks here KNOW what didn't happen. Happenstance, or birds if you like, call it what you want, was not a party to this event.
