Investigators examining one of the separated engines from American Airlines Flight 587 found foreign debris inside, indicating that the engine may have ingested a flock of birds and then caught on fire.
The engine burned internally, people close to the investigation said. But its parts appeared intact, except for the damage from what is known in aviation as ``foreign object debris,'' or ``FOD.'' That would suggest that the engine didn't suffer a catastrophic failure from some mechanical breakdown, but from sucking in birds, these people said.

Will do. You just keep yourself down in that bunker, sucking down those leftover Y2k rations and everything will be fine. We'll let you know when it's safe to come out.
If the A300 is a fly by wire A/C could the reverse thrusters deploy by accedent? Would the NTSB tell us if it did?
I've got to ask you, because this is what's holding me up thinking it's a bird strike. Did you see the vertical stabilizer after it came out of the water? It seemed to not have any visible damage on it, from what I could tell. If an engine had hit it, wouldn't there have been some sort of damage to it? I'd really like to know, if you see my post.
DUCK TAPE? Oh no, not again!
It appears to me that while you're "awaiting results" you're whiling away your time criticizing anyone who expresses skepticism at the gubmint line. . . . . . that might make you a dupe, or worse.
Skeptics are the lifeblood of representative government. There are two ways to get your representatives to pay attention to you: Give them money, or give them hell.
My 'feeling' about this whole horrific thing is this. The passengers on planes will not allow terrorists, that hijack a plane, to complete it anymore. Or at least the terrorists probably won't try that again, because of what those brave souls did that day. So, they will try anything else to cause horrible problems for our country. The more things they can have our authorities investigating, the happier they are. If 'something' timed had been put in the hold of that plane, and if the plane had taken off on time, that plane would have broken up over the ocean someplace probably. That would cause our country another horrible thing of trying to find the site and recover etc. As horrible as it was yesterday, the recovery and investigation, is much easier than it would have been in the ocean.
You can't really get into the terrorists minds..but confusion and terror is what they desire for our country. I can really see them planning this type of thing, and because it crashed where it did, would still please them, because they are terrorists. They just want to cause harm.
It was proven in the TWA800 events that our government is quite capable of formulating a phony theory to explain an airplane crash and use every resource to get people (sheeple in your case) to believe it.
Our government has over the last several decades been very open in showing us that propaganda has a very large value to them. If the terrorists kill 265 people in a nation of 300 million, then this means nothing. But if the terrorists can convince the 300 million people that they can and will routinely blow up an airplane and kill 265 people in the process, then they have scored a victory. In this case it seems most likely to me that the terrorists are to be denied their victory despite putting in the effort to achieve it.
Witnesses say that one side of the plane just blew up in midair, that the explosion was in the fuselage even, pieces of the plane went in separate directions. How long before fascists like you will call these people liars and say that these witnesses are only motivated by a dislike of George Bush? You have said that others who ask questions are motivated by an irrational dislike of Bush even though they didn't mention Bush' name, won't you say it about these witnesses? Come on, make a jerk of yourself, or better yet, just be quiet if you are only a nattering nabob of negativism.
someone taped a duck inside the engines...
Nobody here knows what caused the crash. But those who scoff at the suggestion that a birdstrike may have caused it perhaps have not seen what a small bird, much less a flock of larger birds, can do to an engine and an aircraft. Having seen one such incident and survived another, I know that a bird strike is capable of bringing down an aircraft, especially during the takeoff phase. To imagine the damage that just one large bird can cause, think of a bowling ball colliding with an aircraft or a jet engine at several hundred miles per hour.
*Sigh* Sometimes things just ARE what they ARE. But most times people here don't believe it.
Only in the combustion section. A fire anyplace else is a bad thing. Get a bore fire in a bearing sump and watch how quickly things fall apart. You can tell on investigation what damage happened when....as far as whether the fire was prior to impact or post impact.
That's another thing to remember, a pilot in a plane behind 587 said that. So had it already hit the birds? Were they on the runway? When a big jet was roaring at them? IF it was birds, more likely they were flying, so that doesn't explain the smoking engine at take-off.
