For "IS" and "IS-NOT" though with Rule and Line,
And "UP-AND-DOWN" by Logic I define,
Of all that one should care to fathom, I
Was never deep in anything but -- WHINE.

But if the question were, "Can one figure out who got the most votes in Florida if given a year to do it?" the answer might be different if the margin of error shrinks considerably as the allowable time exands. Even this is a doubtful claim. The more these ballots are handled, the greater the chances of them being physically altered (even unintentionally). There is also the matter of a chain of custody, and security, to prevent tampering - the longer you have to keep them locked up, the greater the chances for hi-jinks.
That's why in elections, under law, there is something called a "deadline". Ballots counted in legal fashion and reported to the duly constituted authorities by this "deadline" are considered to be Legal Votes.
Ballots which aren't, aren't. Rendering this whole thing moot. Bush got more Legal Votes than did Gore. We've known this for almost a year. All else is trivia.

Anyway, what worries me is that Bush is going to feel so emasculated that he'll do something incredibly boneheaded in order to keep the country in his corner. I know, there's lots of people around him to keep him from actually doing anything (visions of Martin Sheen in - that Stephen King movie with Christopher Walken ) But he certainly can continue to mouth off about crusades, and threats, like he did with North Korea.
THE ABOVE FROM THE RATS NEST ARE YOU RELATED?

Its kind of odd I'd say that I must admit that Gore has atleast shown some respect through the last two months, where as Clinton, someone who wasnt even in the race cant quit betraying America. I fully expect Clinton to make some asanine statement about this non-news event where as gore will stay quiet. Could it be that Gore is trying to save face and run again or that, even though he is slime, someone atleast taught him how to behave in public. BUSH won, we all know it, even this story basically admits it under legit circumstances.

these media are pretty pathetic

What have they been using for the "recount" to come up with these totals--the original tainted and skewed tallies from the "official counters" of each contested county? I don't remember the rest of the counties doing a full undervote/overvote recount of rejected ballots (started to, but stopped mid-count). How could the reviewers take the under/overs from these non-counted counties into account? Or being Bush counties, were they simply ignored again? Did the reviewers start over from scratch, scrutinizing every chad in the state? Were they handling the original mutilated ballots when they reached their new conclusions?
The counters in Nov. 2000 were knee-deep in chad. That could only mean the ballots were compromised and the original intent of the voter could never be determined. Yet the counters "divined" the intent of voters anyway. I'm willing to bet the farm that hundreds of Bush-only votes were amended to be overvotes for Gore as well, to be counted squarely in the Gore column. So what's the newsies' criteria for recounting: bogus totals or bogus ballots? Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive....
They wouldn't dream of putting the nation to a vote again...George would beat Gore 90% to 2% (8% going to write-ins for Nader).

The Ballot Counting
according to Dr Seuss
Can we count them with our nose?
Can we count them with our toes?
Should we count them with a band?
Should we count them all by hand?
If I do not like the count,
I will simply throw them out!
I will not let this vote count stand,
I do not like it, Al Gore I am!
Can we change these numbers here?
Can we change them, calm my fears?
What do you mean Dubya has won?
That is not fair! It ruins my fun!
Let's count them upside down this time
Let's count until the state is mine!
I will not let THIS vote count stand!
I do not like it, Al Gore I am!
I'm really ticked, I'm in a snit!
You have not heard the last of it!
I'll count the ballots one by one
And hold each up before the sun!
I'll count, recount, and count some more!
You'll grow to like this little chore!
I will not let this vote count stand!
I do not like it, Al Gore I am!
I won't leave office, stayin' here
I've glued my desk chair to my rear!
Tipper, Hillary, and Bubba too,
Are telling me that I should SUE!
"We find the Electoral College vile!
Recount the votes until WE smile!
We do not want this vote to stand!
We do not LIKE it, Al Gore-I-am!"
How shall we count THIS ballot box?
Let's count it standing in our socks!
Shall we count this one in a tree?
And who shall count it, you or me?
We cannot, cannot count enough!
We must not stop, we must be tough!
I do not want this vote to stand!
I do not like it, Al Gore I am!
I've counted till my fingers bleed
and still can't fulfill my counting need.
I'll count the tiles on the floor
and even count the ones next door!
And I will not say I am done
until the counting says I've WON!
I will not let this vote count stand!
I do not like it, Al Gore I am!
What's that? What? What's that you say?
You think the current count should....STAY?????
You do not like my counting scheme?
It makes you tense? Gives you bad dreams?
Foolish folks, you're wrong, you'll see!
Your only care should be for ME!
I will not let this vote count stand!
I do not like it, Al Gore I am!

We have never counted the over or under votes in any state in any election. It has never even been suggested. Because, duh, all you are really doing is divining what
you think is the voter's intent. And if you are that determined to keep churning those ballots until you get the answer you want, then the only "fair" thing would be to count all over and undervotes in every state. Hello, media, they are invalid or non-votes - you know, like they don't exist. The bottom line is if "your" voters are too dumb to vote, I don't want them making the choice for the rest of us.
The liberal media remind me of children who just keep bugging their parents hoping they will wear them down so they can have their way. Kids, the answer is still "NO"!

2. David Boies did a fine jobEven if Boies had been smart enough to work up a strategy that would have kept the rerererererecount going in Florida, Gore STILL wouldn't have won. The lawsuits would have kept on flying, and in the end the under- and overvotes would have again been thrown out, quite possibly by the SCOTUS. Why? Because voter intent cannot be "divined" after the fact. Not legally, not factually. If there is no clear vote, then THE VOTE IS NOT CLEAR. And thus cannot be counted. All the SCOTUS did with its decision was to expedite a process whose end result was without question anyway.

You're damn right we have a war to win. I guess this kind of story is to be expected as the media has already shown their cards on this war (they're pulling for the other team). It is obvious that this is an intentional distraction to lessen confidence in W and to shift attention away from the war. There is no other more important issue/story than the war. I am so GD sick of the RATS focusing on Florida votes when there were pockets of voter fraud across the entire country. Several states were quite close and could have gone either way. I remember a day or so after the election hearing that Phila, PA had districts that had over 100% of the registered voters turning out (huh?) and voting Gore in the high 90%'s (go figure). Out here in CA the RATS practically own the entire state and with our 3-4 million illegals in the state - and lots of them vote (there are no real controls at the polls). When I think of voter fraud I think of the RATS and their formidable election machine (certain unions, foreign cash..etc). Hell, the Republicans were so poorly organized that I tried 3 (count'em three) times to help in the last election as a volunteer and never got a single call back!!
To: My Favorite Headache
Call it twisted or sick or whatever but I hope something major happens tonight or tomorrow that will squash this story into the freaking ground. I personally hope Bush makes some kind of historic step tomorrow in something to shut this right the hell down. If Bush were Clinton, no aspirin factory would be safe tonight.
Thank G-d that Bush isn't Clinton.
To: Dr. Frank
Granting the vote v. ballot distinction, there's a stronger claim that can be made: There's no contradiction in saying that Bush is President even though a majority of ballots were cast in favor of Gore using any standard one thinks would have been appropriate for counting ballots at the time. I don't see why there's any resistence on this point. Compare: There's no contradiction in saying that a referee blew a call and saying that the call is final, binding and not subject to appeal. If you adopt my position, the claim that Bush won isn't hostage to a claim about the ballots that some people continue to contest. If you stick to your position, it is.
To: shezza
Of course it'd be more like 60-35-5, and Gore would win DC. It would be nice to have a complete revote...can you say Senator Lazio?

GW's response to the inevitable question tomorrow is *I don't have time for this nonsense, I've got a war to run*

This is great news! The Liberals should really be pissed off now. HAHAHAHA!!!!In order for them to be pissed off, they'd need to be sane first. Over at DU they're jumping for joy, as if Gore's going to be moving in to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave tomorrow morning. They really think this means something.
I wonder how long it will take for them to realize the country is ignoring them, including even 90% of the people who really did vote for Gore.
