Earley for Governor: President Bush Says Vote Mark Earley for Governor -- Experienced & Steady Leadership Will Keep Virginia Strong & Safe

For Release: October 29, 2001 Contacts: David Botkins/YooRee Oh Website: www.MarkEarley.com Phone: (804) 440-2001

RICHMOND - President George W. Bush will issue a letter to Virginians this week urging them to vote for Mark Earley for Governor, saying Earley's "experienced and steady leadership will keep Virginia's economy strong and the Commonwealth safe." The letter reaffirmed the President's strong endorsement of Mark Earley this summer.

President Bush states in the letter: "Mark Earley, Jay Katzen, and Jerry Kilgore are experienced leaders with a positive agenda to keep Virginia moving forward - with lower taxes, better schools, and more jobs. They understand it is better to cut taxes than to raise them. They understand we must continue to improve the education opportunities for our children by making sure students have good teachers, smaller classes, and accountable schools. And they understand in times like these experienced and steady leadership will keep Virginia's economy strong and the Commonwealth safe."

On July 26th, President Bush officially endorsed Mark Earley during an Oval Office meeting in which the President predicted Earley would win "because he knows a couple of truths - one, that it's important to let people keep their own money... And secondly, he has prioritized education and he knows full well that if you have a governor who knows how to lead you can set clear spending priorities."

Attached is a full text of the President's letter and a photo from Mark Earley's July 26th Oval Office meeting with President Bush.

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

My fellow American,

In these important times, I ask you to do something important for our nation: Please vote in Virginia's elections on November 6th.

By voting, you reaffirm our nation's commitment to democracy and show the world that America is strong.

I also encourage you to support Mark Earley, Jay Katzen, and Jerry Kilgore.

Mark Earley, Jay Katzen, and Jerry Kilgore are experienced leaders with a positive agenda to keep Virginia moving forward - with lower taxes, better schools, and more jobs. They understand it is better to cut taxes than to raise them. They understand we must continue to improve the education opportunities for our children by making sure students have good teachers, smaller classes, and accountable schools. And they understand in times like these experienced and steady leadership will keep Virginia's economy strong and the Commonwealth safe.

This Tuesday, Mark Earley, Jay Katzen, and Jerry Kilgore have the chance to lead Virginia to a better future and a brighter tomorrow - but only if you vote. Please take time this Tuesday, November 6, to vote for these good men. They deserve your support, and as your leaders, they will make all of us proud.

Thank you, and God bless you, your family, and America.

Sincerely,

George W. Bush

President

I think that letter will also be on the way. Earley is pro-life, as well.

This is what I thought would happen. A letter sent out, low-key, but telling them to go vote for our guys.

Good news. It's possible to be partisan and above politics at the same time. And no one ever suggested that the President (of either political party) was not the titular leader of that party.

Another comment:

I think somebody read the Sunday Washington Post. It mentioned the fact that Bush could help Earley at least three times.

A letter, huh?

A letter in the anthrax-laced US postal system?

Who's gonna open it up?

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

Earley needs a ad with Bush , W has to play ball, because Terry McCliff is and so is DNC are.
If W really wants America to get back to normal, then he should show us the way .

Who's gonna open it up?

Aw, come on. If you got an official looking letter with George W. Bush on the return address (which it will have as opposed to a recent Warner mailing, you wouldn't open it up?

Well, maybe you wouldn't.

Well as much as a few weeks ago I wanted an airport rally with 30,000 flags waving in the breeze, this might indeed be the best option.

Think about it. Bush sent a letter. He didn't "take time from running the war" to campaign, as we all know and have discussed ad nauseum that the impeached rapist would have done.

This mailing, the NRA mailing, with the races in a statistical dead heat, just might do it.

People WILL open a letter from the President. They WILL associate it with patriotism, the flag and hopefully the Republican ticket. This may be all it takes to bring the wandering flock back into the fold (forget Holton and Rhodes, they were lost to the GOP years ago).

We've got a week to know if this will help. I'd sure like to see a poll with the numbers even (without the margin of error).

A letter from President Bush may the best we can do at this time. It's going to be mailed to every single household in the commonwealth? Seems like it would be cheaper and more effective to spend the money on airtime, even if it's radio. Let him read the letter and broadcast it on the much cheaper radio airwaves. For people to open the letter, it should have the White House for its return address, and in case no one opens it, the message should be on the outside of the envelope. Something to the effect of, "We need Mark Earley at this time." I'm relieved he's doing something, but have spent the better part of the day convincing myself we'd have to go it alone.

The letter is already getting media play, WMAL news tonight on the way home talked about the letter and why President Bush is supporting Earley. The broadcast said it is the tax issue, among other things. We shouldn't be raising taxes at this time.

8. POLL SHOWS AMERICANS TRUST CONGRESSIONAL REPUBLICANS OVER DEMOCRATS BY 3 TO 1 MARGIN TO COMBAT WAR ON TERRORISM

Unlike Clinton, Bush doesn't spend his entire presidency in a campaign.

If the race is within the margin of error, then this should be enough to tip the scales.

The state GOP can publicize this all they want and it has much the same effect as a Bush visit.

In fact, some may respect the style of Bush (the low-key leadership) and transfer those qualities in their minds to Earley (maybe Earley will be the same kind of Governor as Bush is President, they might think).

Very nice letter...understand Bush's problem with going to Virginia and hope this gets them out to vote. I have contacted my relatives to reminded them the importance of this election and just hope the R's are feeling patriotic enough to go to the polls.

No, thankfully, no. No one has asked him to spend his "entire presidency" campaigning. What had been asked of him on this forum was to film a commercial, taking probably one hour. The letter takes none of his time as it will be handled by others. I like the both the content and the idea of the letter. It's an appropriate compromise.
