Schwartzkopf told us that 'Snake Eaters' don't win wars. I've brought this up a few times here on the forum for discussion since the world was turned upside down on 9/11. Despite all you great ret. Spec. Ops. guys who have tried to say Schwartzkopf was 'yesterday's army' I respectfully disagree.
Like Ike warning about the Military-Industrial complex .... General S. was telling us the plain truth. Perhaps this new kind of war will prove to be successful once we establish massive forward bases in Afghanistan and from there, strike out ACROSS and THROUGHOUT the Middle East with terrible and sure .... Swift Death.
Perhaps we SHALL see (someday) Gratifying headlines from all points announcing the mysterious cropping up of groups of very dead terr cells even through Europe. Thus signaling the re-emergence of a brighter day, finally, for the Western World.
But it is absolutely imperitive that we take first things first. We are not going to take even a corner of Afgahanistan for establisment of a massive, massive forward base of operations going at this as we now are. A real war on terrorism cannot be fought unless we have total control of some forward base of operations some where near the M.E. If not Afgahanistan then perhaps half the coast of Pakistan. Regardless, in order to insure this we must have a REAL war Against the Taliban and other, new fighters now coming from far and wide. IF not to establish a base then merely because destroying the Taliban is what we said we were going to do. The US must start sticking to it's word as a FIRST step toward defeating Islamist world wide.
Unless we can get Schwartzkopf to come out of retirement or 'miracle of miracles' there's another Schwartzkopf hiding just under the joint chiefs level ...to fight an actual war with hundreds of thousands of infantry and thousands of tanks, Bush will continue to lose this war.
I doubt that there ARE any new Schwartzkopfs. Clintoon decimated the General Staff. Thus the laying of the 'Get Out of Jail Free Card'. The excuse to prosecute a Viet Nam style police action and keep the news cameras completely out of it. Thus never allowing proof of the ineffectiveness of such a losing propositonal excuse for a war.
It won't work. This policy, already plainly evident in this so called war, will strenghthen and embolden the Islamist terrs world wide and we are guaranteed massive Islamist strikes here at home. If the American people are not moral enough to insist on a real war when nothing else will do .... the Islamists will do it for us. And then we'll really be playing 'catch-up'. Same ole same ole.
When your country is at war, you are supposed to be mad at your enemy. Our leaders have to keep the feeling of outrage alive, so that we will have the intensity to stick with it. Bush seems to want us to like our enemies. THIS HAS TO STOP. That is what I am most worried about.
I do follow your input and find some of it valid and thought provoking. Sometimes you do come across like a traitor to our country, which lights me up.
What are the chances, that this is Gen. Franks plan as well? Is he waiting for winter to reduce taliban mobility, and improve thermal imaging?
Do we have the airlift, to support 20,000 troops, being supplied from primitive air fields in afganistan(will every thing have to be brought in on C-130's?)?
Was the recon in force, on the air field, 80km south of Kandahar, mean that's going to be our fortified air field in south afganistan? It is well located.
Yes, I did notice. That, the fact that there was not one thing of substance in any of his posts, and his silly insults and name calling clued me in to the fact that his emotional age did not match his chronological age. (I'd still say pre-adolescence is about right- I've taught Jr. High).
I have a feeling that 20 years from now we'll still be hearing this. I get a sick feeling in my gut every time I hear the President say that the American people must be patient. It seems this 'war effort' is being conducted as much by the State Department as the DOD.

He has called them evil, evil-doers, or evil ones every time he refers to them and his goal is to destroy them. He speaks compassionately about the Afghan children whom the Taliban is allowing to starve, but I sure wouldn't worry about that if I were you.
He has made a distinction between the enemy (whom he most certainly does not want us to like), and Muslims as a whole (whom we should not hate). That distinction must be made for a whole lot of reasons, whether you like it or not.
Exactly...it's almost a pathalogical flaw in his personality. It's served him well in business and politics and he probably thinks that it'll serve him well here too. But it won't...according to the President there are no bad guys in this script except for the "evil doers" (I hate that phrase) and the states that harbor terrorists...and then he goes and invites all the states that harbor terrorists, except Afghanistan and Iraq to join the coalition. Excuse me if I lack confidence in the our victory.
Or perhaps a head fake. Double head fake?

What is with you doom sayers??? It's been 21 days for heaven's sake, and we have no idea how enormous the damage is that we have done to them! All we know is that they haven't completely capitulated yet. That's all. But we knew that they were ferocious fighters from the beginning.

It is not simple doom saying. This is a logical argument tool to debilitate a position you do not like.
It is not doomsaying. It is open defyance of many ongoing policies. My fave is that we are not deporting known terr symps, let alone ME immigrant non citizens. The list runs to ten or so but I'm sure you've heard it.
