In her new book, Political Fictions, Joan Didion indicts the fakery of access journalism practiced by vacant politicos like clinton, whom she sees as "purveyors of fables of their own making, or worse, fables conceived by political strategists with designs on votes, not news."
 (Didion on clinton (bill, that is): "No one who ever passed through an American public high school could have watched William Jefferson Clinton running for office in 1992 and failed to recognize the familiar predatory sexuality of the provincial adolescent.") When I first heard the stories coming out of New York about Hillary Clinton's appearance at a fund-raiser to benefit 9-11 victims, I promised myself I was not going to comment. At a time like this, one should resist making statements that tend to divide. Yet, the thought crossed my mind that people are finally getting wise to her. New Yorker's voted her into office, so it's not my business to question their collective judgment. Still, one has to wonder if many a New Yorker isn't just a wee bit wistful about how it might have been, if only Rudy had been able to weather his health problems so that he could represent New York as an honest to goodness U.S. senator. Still, many others would say that you must stand where God puts you, and Rudy certainly did. Who will ever forget his leadership following that horrible attack? Who could voice a critical or unkind remark about his job performance? Even George Pataki -- who few knew outside of the Empire State -- rose to national affection with his reasoned, gentle manner -- reminding us that some rise to leadership for good reasons. And then there is Hillary. Just prior to her "performance" Saturday, she was known as the urgently important person whose motorcade ran down a police officer. |

- The officer was simply trying to enforce some security restrictions designed to protect us all. Would that be the reason why New Yorkers and a whole lot of firemen and policemen were angry with her?
Or could it be that Hillary, not so long ago, pronounced NYPD officers' accused of violating a suspect's civil rights, guilty before trial? Her approach to members of law enforcement, I guess, is to hang them and then give them a fair trial. Most citizens of this country know that you are innocent until proven guilty. |

Dear Hillary Clinton, As an 11 year old student, enjoying my school life, I have been encouraged to learn about current events in our society, I have read various newspapers and enjoyed media coverage of events that will one day change our society. However, as a daughter of an NYPD officer I am disappointed at your narrow-minded comment about the Diallo shooting. They are not murderers as you call them. They are regular guys, like my dad, Sean Carroll. Our lives have changed a great deal because of this tragedy. I have heard death threats on my answering machine and watched people like you use my dad for political purposes. Hillary, as a woman, my mother encouraged me to look to the bright side and believe in ourselves. However, you as a woman and a mother, are not exactly a good role model for your daughter or any other young girl. I cried when I watched you refer to my dad and his partners as murderers. Hillary, look before you leap. Don't judge a book by a cover. Think before you talk and learn more about a subject before you condemn someone. Shame on you. The real curiosity about that book deal is that, for nearly a decade, Hillary testified under oath that she could not recollect anything important at all. Now we are to believe that she will write an interesting, fact-filled tome about those very same years? How did she get her memory back?

- It's amazing she could not recall firing more than two dozen long-time White House employees, which were little old ladies in the Correspondence Office. I suppose they were in the way of Hillary's ambition to staff the White House with unqualified, undignified political hacks. With Hillary's guiding hand, the White House turned into a circus sideshow, plagued with moral and ethical problems instead of keeping the standard as the premier federal working office.
When she was finished with those brilliant moves, she ordered the firing of the White House Travel Office staff. To cover her reasons -- to "get those slots" for her freak parade (to be fair, who else would work for this woman?) -- she had her staff accuse them of federal crimes and was quite willing to see innocent civil servants off to the federal pen for getting in Hillary's way. Then, her long time friend -- and some say intimate confidant -- died of an inflicted gunshot wound (self?), whereupon Hillary's staff vacuumed his office clean of incriminating and embarrassing documents that were found later in the Clinton's personal residence. But Hillary again claimed she had no idea how they got there, even under oath. |

- EFFECTIVELY PLEADS 5TH BY INVOKING SPOUSAL PRIVILEGE

KnowNothing Victim Clinton held her premiere press conference today on Capitol Hill, ostensibly to answer questions about the peddling of White House pardons by her brother and her campaign treasurer. Notably absent among the press queries were any about her own involvement not only in those pardons, but in the larger universe of sold pardons--the incipient clinton scandal du jour--Pardongate. KnowNothing's brother, Hugh Rodham, secured two of the 141 clinton midnight pardons, one for a cocaine kingpin and the other for a snake-oil swindler. Rodham netted a quick $400,000 for his "work" according to various rodhams and clintons and their assorted lawyers. KnowNothing's campaign treasurer, William Cunningham III, himself a law partner of longtime KnowNothing adviser Harold Ickes, helped obtain last-minute pardons for two convicted felons. LA FAMIGLIA Displaying a willingness to throw her brother (along with her husband) to the wolves, Sen. Victim Clinton was quick to make a distinction between her big, bad brother's pardon "work" and that of her campaign treasurer, "a fine lawyer and a fine man." The "family" connection of brother Rodham to Clinton made brother Rodham's "work" bad, bad, bad, whereas the campaign treasurer Cunningham's connection to the senator and her campaign coffers made his securing of two pardons in record time a sterling example of highminded, effective public service. KnowNothing is apparently not the best of thinkers. If the "family" connection makes lobbying for cocaine-kingpin and snake-oil-swindler pardons bad, bad, bad for brother Rodham, then the "family" connection makes lobbying for the Hasidim 4 (see Keating 5) pardons bad, badder, baddest for the wife, First Lady and senator-elect. Moreover, pardons for votes is arguably worse than pardons for dough. EFFECTIVELY PLEADS 5TH BY INVOKING SPOUSAL PRIVILEGE KnowNothing specifically declined to answer when asked whether she discussed the pardons with her husband, effectively pleading the 5th. Turning aside questions about the pardon decisions her husband had made, she told reporters they should address those issues with him and his staff. She refused to say whether he should agree to appear voluntarily before congressional committees investigating the pardons. Interestingly, no one asked her whether she would agree to appear voluntarily before those same congressional committees. I DIDN'T HAVE SEX WITH THAT PARDON "I did not have any involvement in the pardons that were granted or not granted," insisted Sen. KnowNothing, seeming to forget her presence at the New-Square/Oval-Office schmooze that secured pardons for the four Hasidic felons who set up a phony school in Brooklyn to swindle the government out of millions intended for the poor. RESURRECTING RUFF KnowNothing noted that her"best memory" was that she never spoke to her brother or to Mr. Cunningham about the pardons. With variations of "I don't have a memory" and "my best memory, and avoiding the more obvious "I don't recall" and "my best recollection," KnowNothing reprised the Ruffian standard used during the clinton years to commit perjury without penalty. I GET LETTERS ...or more precisely, envelopes. During her denials of involvement in any of the pardons, KnowNothing made the curious claim: "People handed me envelopes, I passed them on [and never opened a single one. Honest.]" I AM VICTIM Reprising the role of victim that enabled her to win a senate seat in spite of record-high personal negatives, the senator peppered her answers about big, bad Hugh (understanding that the subtext was big, bad Bill) with "saddened" and "disappointed" and "heartbroken" and "shocked." UTTER CONTEMPT FOR THE PEOPLE This session today was cut short by a staffer when reporters appeared dissatisfied by Senator KnowNothing's lack of candor. In the end, this press conference full of poses, poll-tested phrases and prevarication was just another display of the clintons' utter contempt for the people. Bill Clinton committed the same error last Sunday in his shameless, lie-filled New York Times Pardongate Apologia. She proceeded to then embarrass all of womankind by first choosing one who knowingly violated federal immigration laws, coupled with another who skirted close to the same "nannygate" problems, but fell short of confirmation when certain U.S. senators asked if they could review her alleged Playboy photo spread.
Finally, Hillary settled with "Janet, Janet from another planet" -- who will be best remembered as a below-average prosecutor from Dade County, Florida -- who was a fierce opponent of religious sects and willing to burn down villages to save the children. Hillary's Department Of Justice friend and soul mate was also the nemesis of patriotic Cuban Americans who dared to harbor terrified boy refugees. Reno's feds rushed their peaceful Little Havana neighborhood with rifles on full automatic, as well as a rifle butt "hello" for any news media brave enough to photograph Reno's Gestapo-like tactics. |

- Peggy Noonan's excellent piece in yesterday's Wall Street Journal is really the story of the death of democracy. At its core it is the description of the human double helix gone terribly awry, of a denatured protein grotesquely twisted, of two mutant, tangled strands of DNA, the basest imaginable of base pairs linked permanently, as firmly as guanine to cytosine, bill inexorably to hillary and conversely, doing what they do best, and doing it relentlessly.

- My only complaint is with Peggy Noonan's title.

(Note the reciprocity. The sham restitution in Act II is all hillary's.)

- Food, color coding, sex, murder, torture and cannibalism were the exotic (if mostly horizontal) fare in this beautifully filmed but brutally uncompromising modern memoir which passed as ancient fable about nouveau riche rapacity.
- Not for the faint at heart, Purple Hearts or queazy stomachs, this depiction of the gross debasement of America was heavily peppered with irony and dark humor throughout.

Sidney Blumenthal was the stand-in for the Cook and Craig Livingstone the stand-in for the Thief. The last-minute addition of Christopher Hitchens as the snitch was a stroke of absolute genius notwithstanding its cerebral accident, its predictable-if-perfect pitch and its facile alliteration.
