GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- Rare scientific books written by Charles Darwin were destroyed in a fire that gutted a building at Glasgow University, authorities said Thursday

The blaze broke out Wednesday at the 100-year-old Bower building. No one was injured, and the cause remained under investigation, police said. The lost manuscripts, including a collection of 19th-century volumes on botany, were valued at more than $2.86 million, university officials said.

Damage to the three-story building was estimated at $11.4 million.

Gee, first a lightning strike hits a Mosque, and now Darwin's works are burned. Seems like God is beginning to exact some retribution...:)

Nearly a quarter of value of the damage was due to the loss of the manuscripts.

Read Umberto Echo's The Name of the Rose. Never saw the movie, but the book was great. Another one to read afterwards is Louis L'Amour's The Walking Drum. A shame he never lived to finish THAT series!

After your post, there really isn't any reason post anything more to this thread.....it would be fruitless...it can't possibly get any better.

I had a chance to visit Darwin's home just outside of London. There was a large bust of Darwin in the home. I swear to god his head was shaped just like a monkey's. He got the inspiration for his theory from looking at himself in the mirror I'm sure. I've never seen a man's head that looked so damn much like an ape. For REAL!

Yes, indeed. It's simple, really. A billion monkeys banging on the keys of a billion typewriters for a billion billion years ought to be able to handle it--provided they don't screw up and write Hamlet first.

Nothing miraculous about mindless, directionless evolution. Just take inanimate matter, sprinkle liberally with time, and--PRESTO--Charles Darwin!
