A NATION CHALLENGED: IMMIGRATION; Suspects in Hijackings Exploited Loopholes in Immigration Policy
By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO and ROBERT PEAR

Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)

Five Israelis Held In New York
|
October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge.
Katie Shmuel of the Galilee town of Yokne'am, southeast of Haifa, says that her son Yaron is in "a very critical psychological situation," given that they are not allowed to have visitors and the difficult conditions in which they are being held. "Even the Israeli Consul-General in New York was allowed to visit only after asking several times and receiving a special permit," Katie told Arutz-7's Yosef Zalmanson today. "He was allowed to talk to them only in English, and only from behind a glass partition. The Consul told me that the boys are in a bad state and that they are being held under difficult conditions."
When asked why the five youths, aged 22-26, are being held, Katie replied with despair: "It's ludicrous. They were on the George Washington Bridge [between upper Manhattan and New Jersey] at the time of the bombing, and the FBI had warnings of a terrorist plot, of guys in a white van, to blow up the bridge. So when the FBI saw this van, with my son and his four friends - one of them had a large sum of money, there were two razor knives in the van, and one of the boys is named Omer, which the FBI guys thought was Omar - they put one and one together and got three, and immediately arrested them... For the first few days, the boys were held in an FBI dungeon, tied up, with no clothes and no food." She said that original reports that they had been arrested while boisterously watching the disaster from a rooftop "are totally fabricated. For one thing, they weren't even on a roof, they were in a van..."
When asked how she explains her son's continued incarceration and that of his friends, she said, "I truly have no explanation for this incredible story - except this: The Americans are using them as pawns to pressure the Israeli government. Am I being clear enough?" She said that President Moshe Katzav and others had attempted to intervene, but there have been no results so far. The youths are being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Consulate in New York told Arutz-7 that in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, "the Americans now have different procedures for dealing with the detention of anyone arrested in connection with the attacks. Every single request of ours must go through the FBI and the State Department's legal team." She said, "We are doing as much as we possibly can on their behalf," including, she said, getting local Jewish leaders involved in the cause of the imprisoned young Israelis.

Is your wife an illegal alien, has her visa expired?
To: StopTheGuilt
They can't deport legal aliens, I would like to see changes like it being a federal law that local law enforcement must arrest illegals they stop to give traffic fines to, but mass deportation of legal aliens? I don't see that as ever happening.

The few who hate, hate Jews more than they do Christians. ==============================================
I'm not sure I believe that. They've been killing Hindus for quite some time, read some of the Hindu web sites about Islam -- it's quite informative...
Fitz, please. I barely have time to read FR.
Look, the problem we have here is that you feel that the average Muslim carries 'hatred' for the West, the East, Hindus, Jews, America etc. But they don't. Yes, their religion can be a bit fundamentalist depending on geography but most of them are principally concerned with the same things we all worry about- bills, taxes, and how the kids are doing. This fixation you've developed is not reflected in reality. There is no collectivist Muslim viewpoint. I've been around long enough to remember when the West viewed the Soviet Union as a collective monolith who thought with one mind, much in the way you do now with the Muslims. And that public perception had been steadily developed by the security services and the media; the same people who are pushing the "Muslims=terrorists" view, now. Because they advantage themselves financially, by pushing that barrow. Well, the CIA's propaganda proved to be untrue, and after the USSR's collapse we suddenly 'discovered' that it had been riven with disunity, from Estonia to Chechnya. So what I am saying to you is, look beyond the spin and the CNN shock horror footage. Their goal is ratings, not telling you the truth. And look for the best in people, instead of assuming the worst. If you've got time to scan 'Hindu sites' then why not go along to a mosque or some Islamic centre and strike up a conversation? Get the facts for yourself instead of via filters that make their profits from keeping you in a state of frenzied apprehension.

...I know the Arab Muslims are demanding a Palestinian homeland carved out of Israel ----and yet they allow Saddam Hussein to slaughter (by pouring chemicals on) thousands of Kurds who also want a homeland...What's that mean, 'yet they allow'? How could they stop him? There's no linkage in those two territorial issues at all. This idea you're professing, whereby Arabs swim and turn as one, like a school of mullet, is so wrong. Do you really think the 'Arab Muslims' in Iraq can stop Hussein?

..Drop them in an active volcano!!!...Hey, Timestax : instead of all these bloodcurdling threats, and bumps without number, how about actually responding to issues raised in the replies? Give your brain a bit of a workout, because from what we've seen it could do with one.

...was on a group of them in NY which had bombs ready to put in the subway ---but one had a conscience and went to the police and told them even though he couldn't speak English about the bomb making in his apartment....I read that Digest article too. That Arab Muslim couldn't face the thought of innocent people being killed and so at great personal risk went to the cops. Let's keep his example in mind when we're talking about deporting all Muslims 'just in case.'
To: Persian_Libertarian
But I'm annoyed as heck at these morons who keep blabbering about mass deportations. The blabberers aren't primarily interested in terrorism or reason for that matter. The truth of the matter is that they don't like non-white people.
To: garbanzo
And that post says it all. Some of the remarks made about illegal immigration resemble nothing so much as the Serbian/Croatian/Kosovar Albanian/Bosnian Muslim arguments for why "THOSE people" need to be "thenically cleansed."

Even a Pakistani Muslim I knew, who used to be my friend, BTW, approves of terrorist activity against the west. I haven't spoken to him for years, so I don't know what he thinks of Sept 11th.

That Arab Muslim couldn't face the thought of innocent people being killed And he couldn't speak English so they almost missed his message. Just because a rare one has a conscience doesn't mean we should be letting many terrorists who hate us come into this country. The others were here to kill American citizens.

What was interesting about the NY subway bomb making group was that they themselves assumed this guy would be in favor of what they were doing, they didn't feel the need in hiding it from him. Luckily they were wrong about him, but I'm afraid their assumptions are right in most cases.

Read my 416, about a Pakistani Muslim, who used to be my friend till he started telling me he agreed with terrorists. He ceased being my frind that day. From what I have seen and heard, and from having lived in the Middle East myself, his opinion is the majority one.

I used to know some very anti-US Iranians, so anti-US they would burn the US flag on campus --wearing grocery bags over their heads. I know they hated Jews and they said even back then that the US would have to become Islamic one day because true peace would be achieved in a united Islamic world. I always thought it was just rhetoric because they were actually friendly and personable, I see that Persians haven't joined the Arabs in the terrorist acts so I like to think it was just rhetoric they were spewing and that they weren't really evil. It's interesting though they were the ones who told me that Arabs are very weird and backward, they didn't like them at all.
