Strong Caveat: This is the first and only such report that appeared several hours ago, off of Chinese and Japanese news wires, and is unconfirmed. Therefore it is just an advisory that such a report has been filed. Merits considerable skepticism while checking its validity.
Report by China News Service quoting Japanese source in Tokyo per the following (translated by AIT from Chinese from the site at: http://www.chinanews.com.cn/2001-10-24/26/133210.html/ in Chinese, and http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/05/20011024id36.htm in Japanese):
"Chinese News Service Reports: Osama bin Laden Killed?"
Filed by Hiroyuki Sugiyama, Yomiuri Shimbun Reporter based in Beijing.
Based on Japanese sources in Tokyo, news report (s) has been received that on October 16th, both the leader of Taliban Afghanistan Omar and the leader of AlQaida, Osama bin Laden, were both shot and killed in Afghanistan, by elements within their ranks. However at this time no other news sources have confirmed the assassinations.
The CNS news report stated that it is reported that Omar and Bin Laden had returned to one of the underground Taliban bases near Kandahar in the south, at approximately 11 a.m. local time in Afghanistan on 16 October. As the two and others were entering the underground base, it was reported an ally fired upon his (Omar's) back from the rear. The report is that Omar was hit in the upper torso, and bin Laden was hit once in the chest and once in the upper left shoulder area. Both expired at that location.
The report goes on to say that accompanying bin Laden were one of his sons and this son's wife, who were also hit with gunfire in the chest, waist and shoulder areas, and they too have reported suffered fatal wounds from this attack. The second eldest son of Omar also suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his lower torso, and escaped the shooting, but expired on the following day." End of Text
You should get the FreeRepublic 'Standing in the Flames' reporting award. DEVELOPING....
PS I am somewhat more impressed with most recent Japanese TV reporting (TBS, NTV, Fuji and Yomiuri) because in this emergency they tend to backseat the regular bubbleheaded charlatan anchorpeople who are generalists, you know, reporters with blow dry hair who are very surface, and instead turn the spotlight (in a very Asian academic and analytical way) on geeky looking, book-wormish Japanese/Asian academics/area specialists and researchers who focus narrowly on Middle East/South Asia, or may speak Pashtu or Arabic, (and who basically were unemployable before 11 September) to be guest analysts or to go as close to the action and report back real time with satellite telecom TV units or by regular phone from their hotels.
This is often superior, IMHO than the dumbed down pablum we might witness daily and nightly on CBS, NBC, ABC or CNN (which may throw the non-specialist TV charlatans into the reporting even though they have weak or non-existent regional or cultural or linguistic credentials.)
At any rate, let's see what happens with this story which is still unconfirmed. Perhaps senior elements of the AlQaeda were taken out instead of Osama; who knows? Like others have said, "we need a carcass and DNA tests." One can at least be wishful and hopeful.
I would appreciate a "ping" if you hear anything more...
Evidence pointing to the next terrorist 'target' will begin turning up as well, IMHO.
Well, it depends on who you ask.
To fishermen, it's this:
However, the pike I was referring to was a medieval weapon:
Note the spear or spike on the end of the staff.
pike, n. a sharp point or spike; also : the tip of a spear

Maybe "headsonpikes" can illuminate this question more fully?
Judging from his screen name, he must be the resident expert on the subject here at FR.

A possibility here, nothing more. History is replete with similar whoppers promoted officially, where a situation gets exploited to the max, the classic example is the reichstagg fire, a closer in time example is the OKC "attack". How about the columbine kid shooting fiasco? that's another good 'event" to point to. Gulf of tonkin "attack", another classic example.
Personally, I pay little attention to the words spoken by politicians and political partys, I take note, I listen, but never forget they always need a translation. Governments do not speak a language other than 'govspeak", all of them, all the time. I speak "english", they speak 'govspeak" and use "blacks law guild dictionary" words and definitions, not any dictionary most normal people use. Certainly not webster's, that's for sure.
I look at what actually happens over time with all these various politicians, and political party's. Long term past historical results which can be looked at and verified conclusively today, and what they "said" back then, can be compared to today's acts and words, and then extrapolated somewhat well into the future, to see what's coming down the road.
So far, it stinks. it stinks what happened, IMO, it stunk when the setup was happening for years and years with the no borders and unlimited trade and support and propping up various international badguys. I know I was loud in speaking out against it over the years, because I knew it would lead to terrorist attacks being very possible and probable. No, didn't 'exactly" predict 9-11, but certainly did predict one of the top 5 or so metro cities would get nailed within a few years, and it's happened, despite all the protest to the contrary by the pro unlimited immigration and pro-trade with badguy regime folks. They were,, and are, wrong. I haven't forgotten who was in favor of that scene, and it all certainly wasn't all completely nobody else at all whatsoever than 'clinton", either. Nope, just a few more folks than that I think.
Rewarding that past behavior by those various people and applauding the results is a 'bad idea". Taking an absymal collasal failure that the wtc attacks represent, and allowing them to hold themselves up as some sort of galactic hero for being part of the long standing 'bad ideas" is short sighted and misguided, again, IMO. And giving them even "more" of that? Hmm, no thankee.
Again, just one guys observations, and a few questions, that's all it is.
Possible no longer in 'this' world?
