According to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll, 27 percent of Americans say they have changed or will change some aspect of their personal lives to reduce their chances of being the victim of a terrorist attack, and 68 percent said they are more aware of things that could affect their personal safety since the attacks.
Bill Stanton, a security expert and former New York City police officer, who wrote The Anti-Terror Checklist and appeared on Good Morning America , said that there is no need for people to be paranoid, but they should be prepared for acts of terrorism.
One of the most important things you can do is establish a network, he said. Here are his suggestions:
Decide who will be in your personal network, including yourself, your spouse, your children, family and friends.
Trade significant information with and about the other people in the network, including phone numbers, e-mail addresses, cell phone numbers, addresses and directions
Delegate tasks. Get a team leader one person should be in charge of the group
Designate a command post where everyone can meet
Do "what if" scenarios to determine what should be done in various emergencies
Another important aspect is having general supplies handy, Stanton said. That includes:
Canned goods (vegetable soups, fruits)
Dry goods (trail mix, for protein)
Meal replacement type shakes
Bottled water, one gallon per day, per person.
Flashlight, batteries, including all cell phone batteries
Radio
First aid kit
Maps of surrounding area
Manual can opener
Portable heater
Here are other tips from emergency preparedness organizations on how to create a family disaster plan:
Determine and discuss the types of hazards that could affect your family.
Have an out-of-state family contact and at least two ways of contact e-mail, phone, etc.
Keep your vehicles fueled, and be sure to check oil, water and tires
If a biological or chemical release threatens your area, you will be notified by emergency officials and will be given instructions.
Watch or listen for Emergency Alert System announcements
Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to evacuate during a biological or chemical release, but in most cases you may be requested to shelter in place.
If so, close all doors and windows, turn off heating and cooling or ventilation systems. Bring pets indoors. Seal all gaps under doorways and windows with wet towels and duct tape. Do not go outside until given all clear by authorities.
Expell all potential terrorists from the USA. NOW!
I agree. But the network I am putting together will be used primarily to respond to a terror attack, not simply survive it.
First and foremost on the list of "necessities" is a list of single men of Middle Eastern descent living in your home town. If your government will not deal with the threat that they represent, then your "network" will have to do it instead.
What kind of bullsh*t is this, Take the fight to them and make them prepare for us.
1. If find a terrorist KILL IT
2. If you think he is a terrorist, detain it by any means and call the authorities.
3. Post all missing temporary visa holders from around the world and when they're found deport them.
4. Any flack from the people in #2 AND #3, KILL THEM
My idea on our airlines to stop terrorism is to ask for 4 to 6 volunteers to act as deputy's while in flight and if someone or someone's try to take over the plane rise upi and overpower them. I can guarantee you that men will line up at the check in to volunteer before they are asked. Americans don't need Tom Daschle or anyone in our Government to protect us. We are the meanest SOB's on the planet when we are pissed off, and right now, we are pissed off.
The first time some Middle Eastern-looking guy gets up to take a leak and says something to his fellow passenger in Arabic that sounds (in English) an awful lot like, "I gotta ee bomba," he's going to have the crap kicked out of him by these "deputies." He's then going to sue their @sses off, along with the airline, and we will all then become simpering cowards once again.
Hint: If you ever use a travel mode that requires the use of "deputies" like this (or even Sky Marshals) to prevent a potential terrorist attack, get in your car and drive instead.
When you fly on an airplane, your ticket purchase is an implied contract between you and the airline that says they will get you from Point A to POint B safely.
We have to take the fight to them. We also need to inflict so much horror on them that even our friends are scared of us.
