The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Wow! What a coincidence! I found a site which uses exactly the same words as you. So much for original thought.

Granted, we are operating at a significant disadvantage here. We are forced to use and re-use words because we are stuck with using words as they are already defined, and not making up definitions as we go along.

It is Catholic (Apologetic) and it is a good example of cut and paste.

Next you'll check out 24978, Mack's post. It looks like a cut and paste job to me. And since you are an unbiased fellow you will surely take it up with Mack as well. Right?

Every one of them a money makng scheme. I hear they take the poor unwed girls and force them to knit those little caps you always see hospitals giving to newborns. The Church makes a bundle off of them.

He commanded and it was done. The Apostles commanded in the name of Jesus, and it was done - again, no crosses, beads, incense, etc.

Mark 8:22-26

Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. And he looked up and said, "I see men like trees, walking." Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. Then He sent him away to his house, saying, "Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town."

Why did Jesus spit on this man?

Ye of little faith! Grilling me for not responding quickly on an issue that you spent 2 weeks researching before replying? And I replied at length within hours, and you answered my questions with more questions (I'm still waiting on your elaboration of your theory about when James became a believer.) Shame on you! ;-)

Seriously, I don't mean to keep you in suspense. As I said before, I want to give you a thorough response. I'll have something for you, perhaps later today, although I can tell you in advance that you probably won't like my answer.

And don't worry, I'm still not sure about you either - whether you're just playful or snide. Without the little smily face you use, I would probably tip towards the latter. I'll write more later. Christ bless.

The New Testament books were really not put together as a completed Bible until approx 400 AD and also the invention of the printing press was not until 1450. So how did Christians have access, you say that believe in the Bible alone?

The Gospel is a very simple message to pass around.

Guys. This is just ugly. You mock the spiritual practices of others. You doubt that Christ actually spent 40 days in the desert, you won't see that trying to imitate Christ in this is a good thing, you mock any sacrifice we may make to try to imitate Our Savior.

A fast is one thing. Doing it just because someone else did it or is doing it is hardly useful. Fasting is an appropriate tool when it has meaning. Doing it once a year because you are commanded to by your church is not what I'd consider an effective use. Doing something for the wrong reasons doesn't make it wise or profitable. It just makes it an outward look. All surface, no substance.

For goodness sakes Woodkirk admit that your definition is wrong so we can get past this. Reasonable people from both sides agree that it doesn't mean what you think it means. Even if the catholics had this thought, would they really be stupid enough to use the term. No, it would be more subtle. I trust the808bass's interpretation, he's not a RC and is knowledgable. All of us have posted things that we later see as incorrect, but we are better off if we admit it and regain some credibility. If you refuse to admit it, you will marginalize yourself even further and most won't believe anything you post anyway. I'd say "be a man", but I don't know your gender for sure.

If that's true, why do they always look like little Jewish kids? The cap and the blanket together really fit the bill.

We used to do foster parenting for those little kids. Yep, I remember forcing those young moms to wash my car, mow the lawn, clean up after us. Oh, those were the days.

From the Catholic Encyclopaedia:

Why don't you just ask SoothingDave if he, and others, have claimed the Catholic Encyclopedia is not an official Church Document and cannot be used as an example of "Church Teaching".

Thanks for that bit of information. Now I know why the Catholic Church is the only church (and the orthodox probably) to take a consistent, vocal stand against abortion and birth control... money making schemes... that explains it!

P.S. Are you on THE PAYROLL???

Sure, they give them away for free, but they make up for it on volume. ;o)

Back before Vatican II, they'd come over and switch channels on your TV, so you wouldn't have to get up out of your La-Z-Boy.

Gee, and just last week you were telling me it was Bonifice the Third. Remember? I guess any stick is good to beat this dog, eh?

I don't remember saying that. I do remember seeing someone else say it and my commenting on it's relevance. Oops, I did something uncatholic didn't I, put something into context..
