The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

What question do you have? We have authority by the blood of Jesus and through the Holy spirit. If you have neither you have no authority in Him. When the devil tempts, you command him to go. When he oppresses, you command him to go. When he attacks in any other way, you command him to go. But, absent Jesus in your life, you've no authority to tell the devil anything - or any of his minions, or any other spirit. It's not surprising that you haven't heard anything like this. RCC clergy will only say things like 'there is power in prayer'. They don't know the first thing, in my experience, about the true authority they are supposed to have. If your priests ever woke up on that matter alone, there'd be a mass exodus from Catholicism IMO.

Thanks for the clarification. We do know about expelling the devil, thanks. From your previous statement I thought you meant that you personally were walking around like Buford Pusser in "Walking Tall" casting out the devil in all that you see. I'm certainly glad I was wrong.

You should really read a good book (I can recommend a few) for some clarification on what Catholics really teach and believe. Honestly, you haven't a clue. If I want to know how to fix my electrical wiring, I look at a book written by an electrician, not a plumber.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally WANT to go to church. I attend Mass even when I'm not obligated to.

Congrats Al. Beautiful baby. Man she's purple tho. :-)

In case you get curious, there's an excellent Orthodox Church in Lafayette. St. Luke's on Stonehenge Drive. My wife and I attended a few times when we lived in Ft. Collins. The pastor, Fr. David Mustian, is a good man. The parish converted en masse from Episcopalianism about 10 years ago when the Episcopal Church started to go off the liberal deep end.

Thank you. I've never been to an orthodox church. I might be up for an educational experience. You'd be interested to know that a sister church of ours in California converted enmass to Ortholdox about 4 years ago. I'm still scratchin' my head over that one. :-)

You can't be serious that you use William Webster as your sole source of information about the Catholic Church???

I've read whatever he has on the net. I'm not impressed. He spends more time trying to debunk the Catholic faith (and the Eastern Orthodox) than he does explaining his own. Methinks thou doest protest too much.

At least read the many thoughtful rebuttals written by Catholics in response to Mr. Webster's assertions. Then you can form your own opinions.

If your question is truly serious, read Luke, Chapter 4. The example of Christ's withdrawal to the wilderness and his fasting for forty days is most often cited as the inspiration for Lenten observations.

You're kidding? Right? Christ actually withdrew for 40 days in the wilderness? Please. That you would actually compare lent to Christ's 40 day wilderness experience is laughable.

OK, I'm willing to go to a Jewish service. I know there are many synagogues/temples around here, so there should be at least one or two orthodox/conservtive ones. How about Livingston, NJ or Manhattan?

You haven't explained where you think Webster is wrong, you only attack the author. His work is sourced, he didn't make anything up. You RC's always whine about facts, but when you get them, you ignore them and attack the writer, it's what the boys at Catholic Answers are best at. I've read your guy's stuff, it's weak. More attacks than facts on this subject and many others.

Then I guess I'll believe they're serious about Lent when they spend forty days in Death Valley without food or water. Yep, that's so close to not having meat on Friday.

You know what my dad gave up for lent last year? Ice cream. Oooooh big sacrifice.

Congratulations Al. Beautiful little girl you've got there. I remember when my kids were that color. How much hair does she have and what color? (Can't tell from the picture.)

(You do realize that in the end it boils down to you claiming your church is led by the Spirit while the Proddies claim they individually are led by the Spirit)

Finally. Someone who gets it. This is what I've been saying from the beginning.

Of course this line of reasoning also allows us to state the same for your Pope and church hierarchy.

And I've never known you to miss an opportunity to do so.

Serious question: Is it your intention that by bringing down others you can elevate yourself?

Why spend so much effort to try to make others feel less? If you will look closely at it, it harms you too. Why do something that harms yourself?

Are you always joking when you say these things?

I've missed it once or twice, I think. Aren't you a Rams fan? (unless my memory is faulty.)

Who wants in?

I do it every week -- my wife and 2 kids and I go to the 9am service of North Shore Christian Fellowship on the North Shore of Oahu, and then leave there at 10:30 to drive to Mililani for Mass at St. John the Apostle and Evangelist at 11am.

My impression? Personally, I don't particularly care for NSCF's style of worship -- I'm not big into clapping hands and singing for a 1/2 hour, although regularly the pastor has some useful words of advice for Christian living. But the style distaste is due, no doubt, to my being partial to the Tridentine Rite Mass.

I'd consider going to an AOG church as part of Angelo's exercise, but I'd want to fit in and act like I knew something about it. Who's the current Blue Pope?
