I don't expect you'll find the word "Lent" in scriptures. Nor will you find explicit references to any of the liturgical seasons. As a result, we would not consider observance or even recognition of the church calendar to be necessary for salvation.
Nonetheless, we observe the "seasons" of the church year in our worship and in our daily practices. The calendar starts with Advent, then Christmastide, Epiphany, Lent, Eastertide, Ascensiontide, and finally Trinitytide. Through the liturgical seasons, we follow Jesus' birth, showing forth, passion and death, resurrection, ascension, public earthly ministry, and the anticipation of his coming again.
The model for our Lenten exercises is Jesus' retreat to the wilderness for forty days after his baptism and prior to the start of his public ministry. During this season we abstain from various earthly pleasures and make a special effort to examine our lives and to bring them into conformance with Jesus' commandments.
I'd choose a synagogue but the nearest one is over 55 mi away.

3 popes prior - no. The title "pope" didn't exist before Nicholos I, first of all. Second of all, a couple of the documents were much earlier forgeries. Third, it is known that they were created in the time of Nicholos because of certain things Nicholos commissioned done prior to the inclusion of the decretals. They were well aware of the actual history because of the studies done. Such a study would tell them both what they had to work with and what they would have to fabricate. You have to get deeper into the history of what was going on to see the whole picture. Most are not willing to do that. I might also throw in the fact that certain writings that were drawn from, in my readings were available only to Nicholas at the time. Pretty hard to pawn guilt off on someone else in that light.

The Orthodox try to abstain entirely from meat and dairy products for the 40 days leading up to Holy Week, the week before Easter, and try to intensify their fasting during Holy Week by limiting their speaking and television watching and such. The spirit of the season is best reflected in the Lenten prayer of St. Ephrem the Syrian:
O Lord and Master of my life!
Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.
Yea, O Lord and King!
Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother.

What question do you have? We have authority by the blood of Jesus and through the Holy spirit. If you have neither you have no authority in Him. When the devil tempts, you command him to go. When he oppresses, you command him to go. When he attacks in any other way, you command him to go. But, absent Jesus in your life, you've no authority to tell the devil anything - or any of his minions, or any other spirit. It's not surprising that you haven't heard anything like this. RCC clergy will only say things like 'there is power in prayer'. They don't know the first thing, in my experience, about the true authority they are supposed to have. If your priests ever woke up on that matter alone, there'd be a mass exodus from Catholicism IMO.

When we used to live in the desert our friends kept their Great Danes near their trailer whenever there were coyotes around. They said that one time a coyote let one of the Danes chase him out in to the scrub, where a pack descended on him. Our friend chased them off with his handgun.
I don't ever underestimate the power of our Lord, but I try never to underestimate the cunning and persistence of our adversaries either. I don't know you or your situation. If you have genuinely driven them off, God bless you and your work. I would humbly remind you that this is through no power of your own, and to always be on guard against pride. Thus my offer of prayers. My offer was genuine, and I'm sorry that you are not trusting enough to receive it as such. Christ Bless.
The best kind of snowfall, too. Lot's of the white stuff, but the roads stayed clear. We got about 3 - 4 inches here in Allen. Not much by Pittsburgh or Green Bay standards, but it's been a while since I've seen this amount here.
