Recent Changes @ FreeRepublic 12-Oct-2001

Posted on 10/12/2001 7:46:38 PM PDT by John Robinson

Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search.

Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)

I guess that means you believe everyone who names the name of Christ has to become a doormat, I don't think so. My statement was directed to Harley_Hog who I extended an olive branch to before, he chose to let me know in no uncertain terms that I shouldn't ping him in the future.

Considering the spirit of these present pings it was of malicious intent, considering that many complained and he continued to do as he pleased. It's unfortunate that he caused himself to go into timeout, or he intentionally self-destructed.

Since you've arrived does this mean this thread is dead?

There is nothing wrong with a good experiment, as this was. I think it's time to go back to the drawing board, add the refinements, and then pull it out. Alone, it is just too indiscriminate. I note also that the self search brings back as "unread" responses from threads one has read but to which one has not responded direectly. This could be confusing, but I doubt anything could be done about it, considering how the clicking the link takes you right to that reply.

In sum, good tool, but a bit too much of a sledgehammer. Return it in combination with a few necessary options.

Ha!

Actually I can see how the "all" feature would be useful when a thread is an important one to me. I'd just like the ability to decide which flags are personal and which are "all" flags without having to turn the feature completely off.

Are you saying Harley_Hog was being malicious?

Sweats might be too nice of a person to answer your loaded question but I have no qualms.

Yes, he sure as hell was being malicious.

"considering that many complained and he continued to do as he pleased"

If you don't agree, tell me what you thought. Yes, probably from Harley_Hog's point of view it was fun, exciting, thrilling, exhilerating... but to those who had to wade through it, speaking for myself-it wasn't all that.

My question wasn't loaded. I asked because I didn't get the impression that Harley_Hog was being spiteful, or mean in continuing to ping. He/she went overboard maybe, but I didn't see malicious intent.

As you can see by my answer to scuttlebutt, I didn't think Harley_Hog was being malicious, just caught up in the fun. I encouraged him/her by laughing about it, so maybe I was no help. I don't think Harley_Hog was trying to be mean though.

JH2, all that pinging last night kept me up!(heheheh) ;o)

JohnRob, I noticed you were redecorating FR, and was skeptical. Now that I've cruised around here for a while, I love what you've done with the place! Absolutely awesome!;o)

In any event, Mr. Harley_Hog is in the dog house, for now:

No current Freeper by that name.
And the wonderful new "all" feature has been (temporarily?) disabled. ;(

From Irma: I think another helpful solution to the "all" problem would be to have to ability on self-search to differentiate between "all" flags and "personal" flags. A simple "to: All" instead of "to: Irma" on my self-search would solve this problem. Then I could pick and choose which threads I want to open.

An excellent idea......the ALL flagging is making me nuts....I can't imagine trying to cope with this if it was available on every thread. I really don't like getting these 'ALL flags'. Just imagine how a disrupter could create complete chaos using it.

If you wish to continue a pissing contest, let's take it to FReepmail rather than bore every one to death on this thread.

Are you suffering from some form of delirium? I have never pinged you. You inserted yourself into this conversation. And no I'm not carrying a grudge, I called the behaviour as I saw it. The only "All" post in my self-search came from him. I directed my statement to him, because at anytime he could have chose not to insert "All" into the field.

Maybe you should go back and reread previous post to see those who mentioned about the ability to ping all and for those not to continue it.

I see you have issues with "Christians".

I join Harley in saying do not EVER post to me again.

I wish I could GUARANTEE IT, but with God anything is possible. :} If you choose to reply, I'll give you the last word on this one.

The All feature would be very useful if it showed up as All on our Self Search page. As it is, it appears as a personal flag and much time is required to hunt down the individual posts only to discover a general "Bump!"

Harley, back at 'ya. I only received a few dozen flags to this thread. Funny...very funny...not so funny...truly annoying. (^:
