Well, I'm in Lake Oswego, a suburb of Portland, Oregon (about 10 miles south of downtown Portland, on the Willamette River) and about six blocks from here the Police and Fire Departments have the main thoroughfare shut down for about 8-10 blocks, because of some "white powder" in a parking lot along the street. It's right next to the "lake" (which is the main feature around here), about 100 feet from the lake.
I don't know whether it's really anything or not, except that the authorities are taking it seriously. They say the don't know either. So, there are "Anthrax scares" all over the country it seems.
Oh, by the way, they are telling everyone close by (which I guess includes me) to stay indoors and not go out until they have further word. I guess we'll see...
"cough, cough... gag, gag..." :-0
It's a "breaking news story" on the news around here -- so I guess that qualifies. :-) [I don't see it on their web site, but it sure is on TV...]
A tree sitter dropped his powdered tofu?
Yep, got those tree-sitters around here, for sure... ;-) And they're tough in this town. Can't cut any tree down in your yard without a permit and a "hearings process" with your neighbors at City Hall.
Which proves the old aphorism..."There's no sense crying over spilled milk"!
Haw, haw, haw. Well, _I_ thought it was funny.
Corn starch. Road re-opened. This is getting ridiculous.
Ahhh...., I guess I can start breathing again... I was having trouble holding my breath for a couple of hours... :-0
I used to play at George Rogers all the time as a kid.
Ah yes..., I've been down there many times. They've got that "historical" Iron Ore Smelter, the first one west of the Mississippi. And I was watching a softball game there a number of weeks back. It's sure been nice weather around here, for the summer... (not enough rain though... the lakes sure are down...).
Here's a thought the loser pig scum of a terrorist group alcada (sp?) decides to do some damage to the US. Wouldn't sending out envelopes filled with antrax or even just white powder tie up the Feds and the local cops to the point where they might be able to pull-off the real attack. Or it might just be mostly pratical jokes from left wing scumbags or loons who agree with the terrorist pigs. Anyone pulling a pratical joke like this now should be considered committing an act of treason
Well, ya know..., aside from the actual cases of Anthrax, I'm thinking that all this "mysterious white powder" has always been around -- except that no one paid any attention to it before. So, it's probably not any different (as fa as it "happening") than it's been before. It's just the anxiety and the heightened sense of danger that everyone has. And besides, Bush did say to "keep watch" and report those things. So, that's what people are doing.
Four tests conducted showed no signs of any hazardous materials in the substance, which turned out to be corn starch, officials said.
Thanks for the link. I looked and it wasn't there when I posted this. I actually sat around here for a while, wondering whether I should post it or not... Oh well...
I think thats their whole point, but how do we catch it when it actually happens, if people stop reporting these scares. I don't think most people are calling these things in just to irritate police. They're concerned, and thank God for it. Hopefully we'll catch the real ones, while sifting through the false.
Deportation, incarceration or extermination.
We've got to save this country for our children.
Hwy 43 in Lake Oswego Reopens October 12, 2001, 01:00 PM

In the wake of fears about anthrax, authorities closed a stretch of Highway 43 (State Street) in Lake Oswego Friday for a couple of hours. The highway was coated with a powdery substance.
Four tests conducted showed no signs of any hazardous materials in the substance, which turned out to be corn starch, officials said.
Highway 43 was reopened just before 1 p.m., a police dispatcher said.
While hazardous materials crews said it was unlikely that the powder posed a dangerous situation, they shut down Highway 43 between McVey and "B" streets as a precation late Friday morning.
Police had asked everyone to stay inside their apartments and businesses, but said there were no reports of any health problems.
The stretch of highway affected ran right through Lake Oswego's business district. Traffic was reourted around Lake Oswego.
Authorities had believed the powder probably spilled onto the highway off of a truck.
A passing motorist noticed the small piles of white powder every 30 feet or so about 10:15 a.m., said Tim Burr of Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue.
The highway was closed for several hours until the spilled substance was indentified.
Could be one of those peacenicks up there trying to cause problems.
Well, I think these reports of "white powder" probably already happen all the time, anyway. It's just that before, no one cared about it (so "no reports"). Now, everyone's edgy. Anyway, around here in Lake Oswego, I think they get edgier than most... :-0
Well, now I can start breathing again and go outside.... ahhh....
Helicopters? Here's this mysterious white powder all over the street and in come the helicopters? If the particles weren't airborne before, they sure as heck will be in short order.
Yeah, it could be....
But, ya know... these news helicopters can fly up around 1,000 feet or so, and their cameras can zoom in pretty good. I've seen it before. So, they don't have to be anywhere near that stuff and they can get a good shot of it. In fact, that's what I was watching..., with them "zooming in" on it.
So, it's not that bad. But, if it was "airborne" or whatever -- who knows...
This one makes no sense.
Why would the South American cocaine mafia allow anybody to do anything that would jeopardize their customer base?
The terrorists are funded through heroin trade, which may be viewed as a competing product by the cocaine folks. They would view the terrorists as a business rival. Given the way those businesses are run, that would not be a safe position to be in.
