"Unable to persuade the Saudis to accept Mr. bin Laden..."

Why weren't the Saudis willing to take him?

The FBI did not believe we had enough evidence to indict bin Laden at that time, and therefore opposed bringing him to the United States," said Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger, who was deputy national security adviser then.

What a lieing piece of manure. Resentful west spurned Sudan's key terror files (Gobs of info offered on Terrorists)

I didn't totally trust that Sudan was telling the truth about this, but Samuel R. Berger just confirmed it.

Spin. Whenever blame is (rightly and justly) placed on bubba's shoulders, a counter article comes out detailing how hard poor bubba tried, but he just could not get it done.

Your headline is more than misleading. It's a flat out lie. Everyone knows Clinton was dirt but this headline accusation is pure bull. The Saudis refused to take Bin Laden.

It's also interesting that your name fits in beautifully with the fact that the Reagan administration in its fight with communism trained and financed Bin Laden and helped place him where he is today.

I watch the Washington Post reporter on The Today Show this morning. Matt L was asking semi-tuff questions but as always he was defending the Clinton Admin. The reporter stated that they could not indite Bin Laden in a Grand Jury. As G G Lidy says, "You can indite a remote control in a Grand Jury". The burden of proof is not needed.

Kind of difficult to work to get Bin Laden arrested on one hand
and be working with/supporting his efforts with the KLA on the other.

Wasnt early 1996 the time Clinton was being "serviced" by Monica Lewinsky? If he spent half as much time being serviced by Monica as he did hunting down Bin Laden, there probably would have been no September 11 massacre.

Try reading the article, please?

Not to defend Clinton for this, but the title is a LITTLE overblown: it was the Saudis who broke the deal, not the U.S.

The Clinton administration struggled to find a way to accept the offer in secret contacts that stretched from a meeting at a Rosslyn hotel on March 3, 1996, to a fax that closed the door on the effort 10 weeks later. Unable to persuade the Saudis to accept bin Laden, and lacking a case to indict him in U.S. courts at the time, the Clinton administration finally gave up on the capture.

"The FBI did not believe we had enough evidence to indict bin Laden at that time, and therefore opposed bringing him to the United States," said Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger, who was deputy national security adviser then.

If anything, this means it was the Louis-Freeh-led FBI that is to blame, not the Clinton White House.

NPR was hot-and-heavy with this stuff today, crediting unnamed Clinton camp sources. Looks like preemptive damage control. I guess this means more bad news for Hillary is coming out shortly.

The Post has been running a lot of articles like this. Basically they are Clintonista spin, quoting a lot of Clinton appointees, trying to cover their exposed hineys for letting this creep get so big.

Remember, not a word goes into the Post that doesn't serve the purposes of the left wing of the Democratic Party. It's a partisan paper from headline to cartoon page.

Propaganda is information too, just don't lose sight of the fact that it comes coated with an agenda.
