Time to revive that song.
Dumb Historical Footnote: May 10 was the date that Jefferson Davis was captured. Richmond had fallen in April.
THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN
Robbie Robertson
Virgil Cain is my name and I served on the Danville train,
Till Stonewall's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again.
In the winter of sixty-five we were hungry, just barely alive.
By May the tenth Richmond had fell.
It was a time I remember all so well.
The night they drove old Dixie down,
And the bells were ringing.
The night they drove old Dixie down,
And the people were singing. They went...
"La la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la."
Back with my wife in Tennessee, when one day she called to me.
"Virgil, quick! Come see! There goes Robert E. Lee!"
Now I don't mind I'm chopping wood,
And I don't care if the money's no good.
You take what you need and you leave the rest,
But they should never have taken the very best.
(refrain)
Like my father before me, I work the land.
And like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand.
He was just eighteen, proud and brave,
But a Yankee laid him in his grave.
I swear my the mud below my feet,
You can't raise the cane back up when it's in the feed.

Yep...and we haven't even really gotten started ridiculin' these jokers. By the time we're finished FReepin' Clinton, he's gonna be askin' OJ for a character reference!! You recall the infamous name of Benedict Arnold, do you not? Well, "Slick Willie" Clinton's name is gonna be held in 10 times the level of loathing and disgust as his fellow TRAITOR's name!! My five-year-old already recognizes Bill Clinton's picture and yells out, "Hey Daddy, there's the Bad Man who's hurting our Country...you're gonna get him, though, aren't you Daddy?!"

"I'm registered as MudboySlim...I'll come on later tonite with all the graciousness of a Lamb-Slaughter...only invite yer brightest Sheeple, Capiche?!! "
Well, did you?
Please let me explain--I've been thinking about this for a long time!! A National Media requires National issues and National stories to maintain and attract a National Audience. Until FDR's Collectivist Agenda was enacted in the late-30's, folks in Des Moines didn't really give much of a hoot about what was happenin' in Cambridge, Tampa, LA, or Washington, DC...why should they, as most of the news that affected their day-to-day lives was local? But as the National Media Moguls came into power--first thru Radio, then with TeeVee--their needs correlated closely with the desires of a growing Washington Ruling Class to come up with National Solutions to the issues that Americans had always dealt with locally, or at a State Level. World War II also played a part in this as it demonstrated the apparent effectiveness of a National Effort. For almost 60 years, the National Media and the Power-hungry proponents of an ever-growing Federal Leviathan worked in unison--the Media stirring up the fears of the Sheeple with the various "crisis-du-jours", and the Federal Guv'ment stepping in with the solution-du-jour.
However, as always happens with Collectivist solutions to problems, the problems just got worse, which was just fine with the Federal Guv'ment who simply called for even more Federal programs. And the National Media continued to play along, until in 1994 when the GOP took control under the auspices of reducing the size and scope of the Federal Guv'ment...and EMPOWERING States, Localities and Individuals. This scares the Hell out of the Effete Elite Media!! If each State is responsible for their own State's performance, who's gonna wanna watch a National News Program dealing with Delaware's latest Education Initiative?! Yep, only folks from Delaware would give a rat's arse...and they can get that news from a Local TeeVee Network!!
The way I see it, the National Networks NEED Big Federal Guv'ment just as much as Big Guv'ment depends on the Lame-Stream Media...and to Hell with the fact Big Guv'ment doesn't work and woe upon anyone who would try to upset their Vile Conspiracy against the bests interests of the American Sheeple!!!
Sorry to ramble on...MUD
P.S. And don't think for a minute that Ted Turner's New World Order thinking isn't linked to his need to expand his CNN Power Base beyond our borders!!

Wow, it only took the first six words of this post to find something we completely disagree on! That has to be some kind of record. =) I've got a thread here on Free Republic that dispels the liberal media bias myth -- search under "media bias" for posts made a couple of months ago and you should find it. All my arguments against it can be found there. The media doesn't need "big government" to sustain itself...it needs sensationalism, and the GOP has proven itself to be very adept at generating this kind of sensationalism.
And if you're going to go to SC trying to make a point about "liberal media bias", you're going to have a heck of a line to tow. =P

Hmmm...obviously a cool-handed slap at my boy, Ronnie!! But what is yer definition of "sensationalism"?! And do not the DemocRATS tend to use this device as well?
Do you believe Dubyuh is sensationalizing this Tragedy? Or is he simply adept at using the vaunted "Bully Pulpit"? I would tread these waters carefully.

Damn, looks like it's not there...might have been archived by now. Well, basically, I asked people to give me an exaple of legitimate liberal media bias and they couldn't. Nope, not one of these people who crowed so loudly about the liberal media could give me an exaple of what they were talking about. So if you're feeling up to it, post an example here and bring it on.
Hmmm...obviously a cool-handed slap at my boy, Ronnie!! But what is yer definition of "sensationalism"?! And do not the DemocRATS tend to use this device as well?
I wasn't really talking about Reagan, although I'm sure you could find some examples involving him. By "sensationalism," I mean taking a news story and highlighting what people would find titilating about the story at the expense of the story itself. Mostly this involves sex and violence. I'm short on time right now, but when I come back on Monday I'll link you up to some examples of where this has happened.
I won't say the Democrats have never done this. But the GOP uses this far, far more often than the Dems do, probably because the Dems have to deal with this reputation of "liberal media bias" that was created by the GOP! It's a little like "playing the refs" in a football game: If you're a lineman, you accuse the lineman across from you of all kinds of penalties when he's not paying attention, so that when you call a penalty, the ref is more prone to let it slide. If the GOP squeals about "liberal media bias" long enough, it becomes easier for them to pass along their own bias (can you say "FOXNews?") and not have it called against them.
Do you believe Dubyuh is sensationalizing this Tragedy? Or is he simply adept at using the vaunted "Bully Pulpit"? I would tread these waters carefully.
While we're at war, I have made the sacrifice of refusing to criticize our current President in his handling of this matter. I think he needs our support, not our criticism. So I'm going to decline to answer your question.
Depends on what the meaning of "liberal" is, don't it...MUD
No, I don't think there's any room for any bias in the mainstream media, for the most part. But if you can prove me wrong, be my guest.
See ya Monday, all.

Today, I truly believe that they have joined in a concerted effort to deliver Nadaganda, meaning disseminating no information in their goal to protect, defend and uphold the worst president America has ever had the misfortune to experience.
Like the plight of Christians in Red China, Africa, and starting in America, the press, the businessmen, the politicians will come and drink wine and eat splendid fare at the tables of sadist dictators all in the name of friendship and economics, but how can they not see the cost and depravity to human life that surrounds them outside of their fine and rich accomodations?
