About 1,000 Lebanese have been killed... 3,000 have been injured... Hezbollah has fired approximately 3,650 rockets at Israeli civilians...

About one casualty for each rocket fired? That seems like far less force than necessary. "Excessive" force would involve at least 50+ casualties per rocket. There's no reason to even discuss the issue.

Israel's critics (read: Islamofascist sympathizers and activists) insist it is employing more military might than necessary to achieve legitimate war objectives. They point to the obligation under international law of a nation at war to kill, injure or displace the fewest number of civilians consistent with the military goal sought.

So now they're complaining about displacement? Israel's fore-warning t oclear the area is now unjust? Screw it. Just bomb them all into oblivion, and worry about the lawyers later.

Killing or otherwise harming civilians for its own sake is morally reprehensible.

And yet not a word about Hezbollah doing so, even though it is mentioned in this very article!!!

But as with Israel in Lebanon, nations at war commonly injure civilians either in attacking military targets, seeking to accelerate surrender by destroying enemy morale or aiming to deter future aggression.

Nothing indicates that Israel is diong this, but the opening phrase tosses it in as if it were true.

Whether the civilian casualties inflicted were incommensurate with a legitimate military goal is generally unanswerable.

So the article now asserts that the rule it relies upon for its story is entirely meaningless? What passes for journalism today???

And while we're on the subject, the Hezbollah are civilians.

Good catch.

Alexander is famous because he won, not because he was fair....

Absolutely. The same for Ghenghis Khan and Attila the Hun.

This idea of proportionate response is sick.

And I agree with you that these same anti-war...can't we all get along bullsh*t we're seeing here in the USA is indeed a product of T-ball and soccer games where they don't keep score.

If children learned about winning and losing we'd be much better off, IMO.

"They point to the obligation under international law of a nation at war to kill, injure or displace the fewest number of civilians consistent with the military goal sought"

And Hezbo pays a lot of attention to this restriction every time they lob missiles into Israeli neighborhoods.

Maybe next time Israel will have the right type of Government to give the IDF a green light. In that theater you cannot win battles while trying to please the International community led by the Useless Nations Organization (UN).
Did Israel exceed the limits of proportionality? As soon as Jacques Chirac accused them of this I knew that they had not. Did you notice that the only time the French conduct war is in Africa? Limits the risk does it not? Now when you compare their weapons with those of the natives that is an example of a disproportionate fight.

Louise Arbour mentioned War Crimes when talking about Israel’s response. If she read the Geneva Convention she would realize that one of the biggest war crimes is to hide your weapons in civilian populations!
Finally, name me another nation that distributes flyers warning civilians to get out before an attack?

Carpet bombing would be ideal, however, I'm still hoping for the MOAB!

I wasn't being sarcastic about this issue ... only wanting to discuss fact and not some form of projecting a form of personal anger dressed as legit information.

Israel bombs Christian Beirut district
By Associated Press
August 4, 2006

Updated 12:55 p.m.
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israel expanded its assault on Lebanon today, launching its first major attack on the Christian heartland north of Beirut and severing the last significant road link to Syria.

Hezbollah renewed attacks on northern Israel, killing four civilians, three of them Arabs, in a barrage of 140 rockets.

An Israeli airstrike hit dozens of farm workers loading vegetables near the Lebanon-Syria border, killing 28, the workers' foreman and a Lebanese official said.

Five Lebanese civilians were killed and 19 wounded in the Israeli airstrikes north of the capital in Christian areas where Hezbollah has little support or presence, including the picturesque coastal resort of Jounieh.

I just find it a rotten shame too many Freepers cannot write in proper English and worse, few, if any, ever complain...

Hey, I make mistakes too often myself, but at least I try...
