Smoker's saliva a 'cocktail of chemicals'

LONDON (Reuters) - Smoking destroys protective molecules in saliva and transforms it into a dangerous cocktail of chemicals that increases the risk of mouth cancer, scientists say.

"Cigarette smoke is not only damaging on its own, it can turn the body against itself," said Dr Rafi Nagler, of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel.

Saliva contains antioxidants, molecules that normally protect the body against cancer, but Nagler and his colleagues have discovered that cigarette smoke destroys the molecules and turns saliva into a dangerous compound.

"Our study shows that once exposed to cigarette smoke, our normally healthy saliva not only loses its beneficial qualities but it turns traitor and actually aids in destroying the cells of the mouth and oral cavity," he added.

In research reported in the British Journal of Cancer on Wednesday, Nagler and his team studied the impact of cigarette smoke on cancerous cells in the laboratory.

Half of the cells were exposed to saliva exposed to cigarette smoke and the other half just to the smoke. Cells exposed to the saliva mixture had more damage and it increased along with the time of exposure.

"Most people will find it very shocking that the mixture of saliva and smoke is actually more lethal to cells in the mouth than cigarette smoke alone," Nagler added in a statement.

Smoking and drinking are the leading causes of head and neck or oral cancers, which includes cancer of the lip, mouth, tongue, gums, larynx and pharynx. Nearly 400,000 new cases of the illness are diagnosed worldwide each year with the majority in developing countries. The five-year survival rates are less than 50 percent.

Nagler and his colleagues believe the research could open up new avenues to develop better treatments to prevent oral cancer.

"This insight into how mouth cancer can develop offers more reasons for smokers to try and quit," said Jean King, of Cancer Research UK, which publishes the journal. "People know the link with lung cancer and this research adds compelling evidence about the damage smoking can do to the mouth."

The current body of evidence has a MUCH higher risk factor between SHS and coronary heart disease.

30% versus this study finding of 20% for the risk factor of SHS related coronary death. Not that much higher.

It study found that there is a 20% risk factor for SHS related coronary deaths. SHS kills.

Wrong. Read it again.

Did you read it? I think not. If you did you would know that:

1) They only used mortality data, not illnesses, thus they can only speak to mortality rates.

2) When they say there is a 20% risk factor for SHS relate coronary disease they really mean that there is a 20% risk factor for SHS related coronary deaths. Thus they are concluding that SHS kills.

It's why the anxiety associated with a flat tire causes smokers to reach for a cigarette while the non-smoker reaches for a jack. The anxieties build until the doubly stressed smoker cries out "I NEED A CIGARETTE!"

Good posts! It reminds me of the panic while fumbling for a cigarette or trying to find that missing lighter or finding that the lighter is out of fuel.

I Smoke Because I Like Smoking!

Scratch sheet discarded by a smoker:

-------------------------------------------

Why do I smoke?

I like smoking
It calms me down
I like the taste
I like the smell
It makes me feel glamorous
It helps my asthma
I started when I was a stupid kid and now I can't kick the habit.

You stand in the way of letting our children have the benefits of life long smoking and/or life long breathing of SHS.

I have actually had some post here that because of the anti-smokers attitudes they would make sure that their children were taught to smoke at an early age!

Do you remember Judith today recommending that she would rather have a cigarette to cure an acute asthmatic attack rather than proper medication.

Now the little mullet is conveniently leaving out the side effects of prednisone, Singulair, and theophylline. I can't handle the way it twists posts anymore. I think it's a frikken liberal social engineer.

SheLion, no problem kiddo, thanks for the note. ;-D

Well, let's leave the nutter to its seeds, shall we? Surely there are more interesting threads.

Even if I didn't smoke, I'd smoke if for no other reason than it might offend you.

Sorry! I had to call it a night.

I see the hot air bag kept the thread going though. LOL!

I zone out with his posts anymore. What he writes means nothing to me, so why read it?

He one of FR's "darlings."

9. Debt

Using credit cards is also a sin, as is mortgaging a house. I hope you pay cash for everything. I wouldn't want you to be committing any sins as serious as using tobacco.

"I assume you are free to rewrite the bible anyway you see fit in order to make it fit your own personal world view....."

Just as you actively are doing on this thread. If the scripture you and I posted are only referring to eating being consumption, I will ask you again for answers to these questions:

1) Is chewing tobacco a sin?
2) Is chewing gum a sin?

Remember, consistency is our friend.

"If you are over the limit in your BAC, you will go to jail"

Another false statement. It is perfectly legal to be over the legal limit in BAC. It is illegal to participate in certain activities while over the legal BAC limit.

Actually I do. But I would borrow when the use of the funds creates an asset greater than the cost. I would only be concerned when the payments due on the debt might cause me to be unable to do God's will.

"although a 20% increase in risk of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease could not be ruled out."

Until the Lieberals find huge stockpiles of WMD, giftwrapped and labeled "to attack American infedels" GWB lies could not be ruled out.

If you can't prove a link, make a statement like "could not be ruled out" and the kool-aid drinkers will beleive it proves that a link exists. In case you didn't know, it is impossible to prove a negative!

1) Is chewing tobacco a sin? 2) Is chewing gum a sin?

As a Christian, anything that I put ahead of the Lord is a sin. If both of your examples becomes an addiction then yes, they are both sins.

As for consitency, recall that it was you who presented the Gen verse as somehow meaning that it was permission from God to smoke. Instead of pointing out your folly in the meaning of the words, it would have been better for me to explain something about what is required of a Christian. The old testament provided many rules and many laws. What yuo cited isn't one of them however. Jesus fufilled the law, something we sinners could never do. A christian has the law written in their hearts. The fruits of this law can be seen in outward signs and behaviors. Many examples were cited by Paul in his letters. Paul also cited examples of behaviors that show the person isn't acting within the law in their hearts and consequently will not inherit heaven. I must add that Christians sin continually. The difference is we try to recognize our sin, we repent and turn back toward God. This process happens over and over and faster and faster as we mature in the faith. Addictions have the effect of causing us to turn our thoughts continually away from God so that the need to smoke, drink etc occupies the time and space in our minds that God should occupy.

"Most smokers start as kids under peer pressure before they realize what a deadly habit they are taking up. Most (70 percent) wish they could quit."

More baseless claims. How about proving this claim?
