A Tobacco Watershed

A BIPARTISAN proposal in Congress to give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco products is a milestone in the tobacco wars. The bill has strong support from anti-tobacco activists and Altria Group Inc., as tobacco giant Philip Morris is now known. It is sponsored by two Republicans, Sen. Mike DeWine (Ohio) and Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (Va.), and by two Democrats, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (Mass.) and Rep. Henry A. Waxman (Calif.). Philip Morris has, for some time now, declared its support for FDA jurisdiction in principle -- a position that puts it at odds with the other major players in its industry. But the company and public health advocates have not agreed on how strong the agency's authority should be in critical areas. Now, for the first time, both sides have signed on to the same bill.

Rino or not - I've got a seriously hard time with a tobacco state congresscritter doing this. Especially with Kennedy and Waxman involved.

The campaign contributions from PM and employees and subsidiaries to Davis will be interesting to see.

She Lion - what do you think about JaJ letting us know if he can't make it on a Friday and one of us opens the Lounge on Fridays?????

Well, if "I" did it, it would be an old one. I don't collect all the smoking links to add, like Joe does.

Maybe he can give you the password so you can add the new links??? I don't want it, but I'm sure he will give it to you!

They're forward thinking, and just may end up cornering the market.

They can do it without me. I won't spend one red cent on a PM tobacco product!

They are kissing the butt of the enemy in order to be granted a government sanctioned monopoly and kicking their customer base in the butt at the same time.

Gabz! I read awhile back that if tobacco becomes regulated, then the FDA would have to BAN it because they could not deem it safe. Pretty nice, eh?

PM is putting the screws not only to smokers, but to the other tobacco company's as well.

Same thing they did with the MSA.

I don't know which one of us hates PM more, you or me..........but to be honest, they are in the same category as the Joe Cherner's and Stan Glantz's of the world in my book.

PM has been a joke for awhile.

Your not kidding!

They have this ad on TV about quitting smoking, and how we can QUIT smoking and how they will HELP us quit smoking.

I get so damn mad I hit the remote. I keep thinking if they are that against smoking, why are they still selling cigarettes? They are hypocrites of the worse kind!

I would expect RJR and possibly Lorrilard to be competative enough that they will survive FDA regulation.

Sorry. But it would be all American Tobacco Company's. :( The FDA would have to regulate ALL of them. :(

Adding the links is nothing.........

I just have to know in advance because if I open it it will get openned early in the morning and then I will need others to keep it bumped.

School gets out in 2 weeks - I go back to being full-time mom, so my daytime FReeping time is going to be severely limited for a couple of months. Fridays are not a major problem for me because hubby is home.

Big Tobacco sold us out and PM is trying to put the nails in the coffin.

RJR has to large a facility at Tobaccoville, NC and is PM's prime competitor. They will produce under FDA regs if it happens.

Sure. But if tobacco is regulated, does that mean smokers will have to get a prescription to buy cigarettes?

The local stores won't be able to sell it anymore. It will be behind the counter at the pharmacy. :( IF FDA even allows cigarettes to be sold after the regulate it.

My bags of tobacco come from overseas. It's an import..........I sure hope and pray they leave IT alone and forget about it. After all, they sure don't want to hurt the "poor countries" over there. heh!

Nah, you won't need a prescription to get cigarettes. You'll just have to jump through hoops to manufacture them...much like OTC medications.
