A BIPARTISAN proposal in Congress to give the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco products is a milestone in the tobacco wars. The bill has strong support from anti-tobacco activists and Altria Group Inc., as tobacco giant Philip Morris is now known. It is sponsored by two Republicans, Sen. Mike DeWine (Ohio) and Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (Va.), and by two Democrats, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (Mass.) and Rep. Henry A. Waxman (Calif.). Philip Morris has, for some time now, declared its support for FDA jurisdiction in principle -- a position that puts it at odds with the other major players in its industry. But the company and public health advocates have not agreed on how strong the agency's authority should be in critical areas. Now, for the first time, both sides have signed on to the same bill.

had you said something to me earlier in the week I would have done it Friday. Normally that is my date day and that's why I don't jump in to volunteer.....but hubby was out of town last week and I was home all day Friday.....
She Lion - what do you think about JaJ letting us know if he can't make it on a Friday and one of us opens the Lounge on Fridays?????
I'm really lazy.
LOL!!!!
And a heavy drinker too!
Got to hand it to Phillip Morris. They're forward thinking, and just may end up cornering the market.
HIC
And I don't hardly ever watch TV
I don't find them forward thinking at all.
They are kissing the butt of the enemy in order to be granted a government sanctioned monopoly and kicking their customer base in the butt at the same time.
PM should get out of the tobacco business althogether instead of climbing into bed with the prohibitionists.
PM has been a joke for awhile.
"They are kissing the butt of the enemy in order to be granted a government sanctioned monopoly and kicking their customer base in the butt at the same time."
I would expect RJR and possibly Lorrilard to be competative enough that they will survive FDA regulation.
I still prefer RJR over B&W or Lorrilard. But any of them are preferable to PM.
LOL!
Of course, how the FDA is going to let tobacco stand as a legal product should require some pretty nifty pretzel logic.
And I'm dumb too!
My understanding right now is that both RJR and Lorrilard remain opposed to FDA regulation.
PM has something up its sleeve. My guess it is a new brand that they are seeking to be able to market as a "safer" product. This FDA control not only will cover ingredients, but advertising.
I've been saying it for years and I will continue to say it - if PM is in favor of a particular government regulation, it's guaranteed to be detrimental to consumers.
I am not a fan of company boycotts - they really only hurt the folks at the low end of the totem pole who work for a company and have no say in policy. But when it comes to PM (Altria) I have no clue why smokers continue to buy their products - they are so anti-smoker.
He is my Congressman and he is turned into a Rino.
Well, with PM working with Congress,to have tobacco regulated, and if it passes, the other tobacco company's will have to comply as well. PM is putting the screws not only to smokers, but to the other tobacco company's as well.
Still upsets me that they are still selling cigarettes. I hate PM with a passion. I have for a long time!
What about the week before, Joe?
