Thanks for the thread. I haven't responded before, but I frequently lurk.

While my hat is off to Battle of the Bulge vets, lets not forget that another battle was raging on the other side of the world. Sometime before Christmas, 1944, my father was listed as MIA on Leyte, P.I. His family got word of this when their Christmas package was returned with the news. Most of his company was annihilated be he and a few others were recovered alive. I have his V-mail letter explaining that he was hospitalized on 3 Jan 45. He was with the 32nd Infantry divison. Actually, this marks the 60th anniversary of that outfit's terrible campaign in Buna, New Guinea (Dec 42). My father joined the 32nd as a replacement in April 43.

Thanks for the alert and thanks to Sam.

My unit was part of a newly arrived rookie infantry task force. Our full Division had not yet arrived. In early December we were briefly attached to Patton's Third Army before being assigned to the Seventh to defend Stassbourg. We were the last American unit on the line, next to the French. The French unit had a lot of Algerian soldiers of which we were leery.

The Alcase people welcomed us at first but as the tide of battle turned against us, support vanished, white flags appeared in the windows of a confused people. In was a very cold and snowy winter. The Nazi preparation included white painted tanks which were less observable from the air. Anyway, we regrouped and started back into Germany. The Bulge was closed and the Nazis were finished.

Good idea with one big problem: In many cases, these women refuse to divulge the identity of the real father. Whether they are embarrassed by who they slept with, or whether they don't know his name, or whatever, they won't tell. This unfortunately is part of the reason that the system is the way it is. Thats why I believe the only solution is to stop the money flow. You want to get divorced? You want custody of your kids? Then you support them. If you want your former spouse to help, then keep him part of the kid's lives. If he doesn't want to help, so be it. If they know up front that those are the rules of the game, then perhaps it will change some behaviors. But we have to stop scamming half the population (men) in the name of "the children".
