Happy birthday! Too bad we're in a Foxhole, or I'd bake you a cake.

Light Speed, stop snickering! I 'can' bake! I just don't like to.

Wow! What a remarkable story about the ME-109 pilot who spared the lives of the B-17 crew. I love what you bring to the Foxhole. Thanks so much for your posts and pix.

Sorry, I need to correct your conception of this:

I put quotations around it to mean that it came to me in e-mail.
I didn't intend to relate this as being first person, and I should have clarified that.
It doesn't detract from the beauty of the story.

Speaking of cookin and critters...was at a campsite..had a biggy steak on this ground level grill..whoo hoo!
I turn to look..and notice the steak flipping in the dirt..with a Gopher springing into the air.
the little guy would not let go of his prize...even though it was too hot for him.
Heavy sigh...I walked away...I'm sure I heard God laughing in the background!

Oops! My fault. Thanks for sharing it, nonetheless.

The offer for DC tour stands. Come visit. I know you guys
have a tall obelisque in Austin, but we've got the original
one on this side of the ocean here in DC.

Be well,
Michael (aka Nicollo)

Do you mean your dad is not a FReeper? If he's not, he should be! We'd love to hear his stories and see pix of his wartime memories.

Also, check out the Veterans History Project link I posted in #92 (I think that's the right number). Future generations need to know what our wartime veterans experienced!

Raccoons may be cute, but if they're related to Skwerls, I don't like them!

I ain't afraid of no Algore or his Sierra club either (...as long as I have my Blue Bomber spud chucker - and if GWMoore would ever teach me how to shoot the dang thing!). ;-)

UH-1 Huey Helicopter
The most widely used military helicopter, the Bell UH-1 series Iroquois, better known as the "Huey", began arriving in Vietnam in 1963. Before the end of the conflict, more than 5,000 of these versatile aircraft were introduced into Southeast Asia. "Hueys" were used for MedEvac, command and control, and air assault; to transport personnel and materiel; and as gun ships. Considered to be the most widely used helicopter in the world, with more than 9,000 produced from the 1950s to the present, the Huey is flown today by about 40 countries.

It would be interesting to know if that over 30 million figure is accurate regarding huey/slick missions flown.
Boy I really hate to sound like a certain EX impeached president. But it depends on what you mean by "mission".
5,000 Hueys times 12 years that's 60,000 missions a year, 5,000 a month, about 166 a day so if you count a hop from Saigon to Long Bin as a mission, or say 3 hueys on a resupply run counting a 3 missions then yes I suppose it's possible.
they also could be using the term huey/slick when talking about all helicopters used in the war.
