One of my strangest travel experiences came around the time of the 50th anneversary. I was in Japan on business and catching a flight from Tokyo's city airport (Haneda) to Osaka. I knew the 50th anneversary ceremonies were taking place soon as it had been on CNN all the time I was in Japan.

There in the waiting area was an elderly gentleman, wearing a navy blazer and a hat remenicent of our American Legion hats. In English, it said Iwo Jima Survior. With him was a Shinto priest, dressed in black robes and white socks. I only guessed they were heading south to Iwo. The old man looked at me and we sort of smiled. Then he bowed to me. Being elderly, it should have been me to him if my Japanese manners were correct.

I was surprised. Out of respect for his age and the fact he had probably been a 20 year old scared sh*tless conscript kid then, I bowed back.

But to this day, I wonder if the meeting would have been so respectful had we met 50 years earlier.

I thank our Marines, Navy, Army and Army Air Corps for giving me the opportunity to travel and work in Asia as I did, a free American.

	Gods Graves Glyphs	Thanks SandRat. Nearly every day until the end of World War II, crippled bombers landed on Iwo Jima's airfields. The importance of the island hit its peak on June 7, 1945, when 102 B-29s landed on Iwo Jima and then again when 186 bombers landed on the island on July 24, 1945. By war's end, a total of 2,451 B-29s made forced landings on the island. This figure represented an estimated 26,961 flight crewmen, many of whom would have perished at sea without the availability of Iwo Jima as a safe landing strip. One B-29 pilot said, "Whenever I land on this island, I thank God for the men who fought for it." Just adding to the catalog, not sending a general distribution.
