DISABLED VET ASKS BARACK OBAMA A QUESTION
VHCM member | Tue 7/15/08 | Gary McDermott

Posted on 07/15/2008 11:15:07 AM PDT by Calpernia

I am a VHCM member, I spent 12 months in Vietnam (147th CH47-CE) as most of us did.

I am also a disabled veteran; I have been a wheelchair user for 35 years now.

A few months ago I went to listen to Barack Obama at a local college. When he was done with his speech I got in line to ask him a question. When my time came, my question was:

' Senator Obama ; I work with disabled veterans throughout the VA Hospital system, what is your plan for our veterans, especially our disabled veterans who use the VA Hospitals for their care. I stated we need mandatory funding for our VA system to ensure the care is available when needed, especially in light of the current situation in Iraq and the numbers of troops who are coming home with severe disabilities.'

He told one of his aide's to get my name, blew me off, did not answer my question and I never heard from him or the aide again!

Is this who we want as our 'Commander in Chief'? I certainly don't.

He wouldn't even answer a 'veterans' question, regarding other veterans.

Take it for what it's worth.. just thought I'd pass on my experience with Mr. Obama.

Regards,

Gary McDermott 147th ASH Hillclimbers Vung Tau, RVN 68-69 CH 47 CE

If you are wishing for hope and change, you better know what the salesman is selling!

Funny that he couldn’t articulate it since the Vet’s For Obama website has the following.

http://vetsforobama.org/barack-obama-on-veterans/

Barack Obama’s Plan A Sacred TrustBarack Obama believes America has a sacred trust with our veterans. He is committed to creating a 21st Century Department of Veterans’ Affairs that provides the care and benefits our nation?s veterans deserve.

Allow All Veterans Back into the VA: One of Obama’s first acts will be reversing the 2003 ban on enrolling modest-income veterans, which has denied care to a million veterans.
Strengthen VA Care: Obama will make the VA a leader of national health care reform so that veterans get the best care possible. He will improve care for polytrauma vision impairment, prosthetics, spinal cord injury, aging, and women’s health.
Combat Homelessness among Our Nation’s Veterans: Obama will establish a national “zero tolerance” policy for veterans falling into homelessness by expanding proven programs and launching innovative services to prevent veterans from falling into homelessness.
Fight Veterans Employment Discrimination: Obama will crack down on employers who commit job discrimination against guardsmen and reservists.

While the gov't should pay for veterans care there is no reason at all why the gov't should actually provide the care. The gov't should buy a great insurance policy for every vet. The reason Vet care is often no good is because, well, they are government hospitals.

PING!!!

Obama and his gang could’nt care less about wounded veterans. Casualty lists are only fuel for their propaganda machine. I only pray that enough of the electorate will see them for the insidious evil that they are, before it is too late.

Numbers for the ‘reactionaries’, like ncfool’s Obama graphic says about the flag pin.

You’re fortunate that you happened to ask the question at a time when Obama is trying to improve his image with the military and retirees. Otherwise he wouldn’t have bothered to ask his assistant to get your name.

I’m not Gary. And the assistant never followed up and got the information.

I like your thinking. I'm a 40% disabled Vet, and even though I qualify for care at the VA Clinic I opt to use my civilian insurance. I've tried using the VA clinic a couple of times and had very negative experiences.

I have to wait six months for an appointment.

I was assigned a doctor who didn't speak English - his nurse had to translate for him.

The doctor wrote me a prescription that almost killed me and it took six months to get back in to get the correct medicine.

The VA "killed" me off and it took 8 months and numerous personal visits to correct the problem and get my benefits reinstated.

They made appointments for me without consulting me. I would end up with an appointment at a clinic 140 miles away at 0700. That meant missing a at least a full day of work for each appointment.

The government should allow disabled vets to participate in TRICARE-PRIME - the same insurance plan that retirees use. They should pay the $500 a year premium.
