My parents recently purchased a home in Northwest San Antonio. My dad, a Vietnam Veteran, used his VA Home Loan to purchase the house they always wanted and rightfully deserved.
After settling in my dad put up his flag pole---the same one weve had in every house Ive ever lived in. We fly the American flag on a regular basis and a POW-MIA flag during appropriate holidays. My dad was approached by a member of the mandatory Home Owners Association (HOA) and said that some concerns were raised at the last HOA meeting with regards to that damn Mexicans flag pole.
My dad was surprised considering this has never been an issue in any other residential area weve lived in. Apparently some members thought it brought down the value of the property and surrounding properties. My dad then proceeded to thank our neighbor for the heads-up and told him that he was more than willing to tell the person with the complaint where they could shove the flag pole. Good ol dad. Later on that week, before the members of the HOA my dad stated that he went at the age of 18 to fight for our country to protect our individual freedoms and rights and he would continue to honor our country and our servicemen and women by flying that flag whenever he saw fit, regardless of the HOA standards or any complaints. He then dared the person with the complaints to tell one of our other neighbors to remove both her American flag and her Marine Corps flag which she flies daily after he son died in Iraq last month. The room fell silent...

That looks like the “heineken” party guy sleeping it off!
My only sadness is that ours is the only flag flying on the block. :(
Join the HOA and make flag-flying mandatory.
ooohhhh, brilliant!
I apologize for being so sensitive about words that denigrate the Creator.
Apology accepted, except the word GAWD does not refer to the Creator.
The word “GAWD” is not without meaning. It was included in the title of this blog post for a reason. “GAWD” is a substitute for “God,” obviously. But of course you knew that.
Gawd is absolutely not a substitute for God. Gawd is what you say when you do NOT want to take the Lords name in vain. God is what you say when you are reverently expressing respect for the Creator. Gawd is a colloquiolism; God is the name of "I AM THAT I AM".
Buf of course you knew that.
I'm getting used to it.
Of course, it's not helping me a lot with the ladies. :^(
THEO: Maybe they could politely ask the association board for an exception. Or they could demand their rights and earn a reputation as being bad neighbors.
Who are the bad neighbors? Those wanting to put a flagpole on the land they own? or, Those trying to impose their anti-American beliefs on someone? By anti-American, I mean the fact that anyone can tell you what you can and can’t do with your own property. I also mean anyone in the United States having issues with an American flag. Yes, I said it. If you have a problem with the American Flag, you are anti-American and you are not a patriot. Said it. Said it. Said it. If you don’t like it, you can hop your happy ass on a plane, come over here to Bagram, Afghanistan, and we can talk about it.
I appreciate your service.
There are no reasonable limitations on one’s right to use his property as he sees fit. If the jerk next door wants to paint his house in primary colors, it is his house.
This is just not true. If you and I are neighbors and we sign contracts that say we will not paint our houses in primary colors, and then you do, you have violated the contract. That is what a Homeowner's Association is. If you don't want to abide by the rules of one, don't buy a property that is subject to one.
But you cannot say, "I love this house, how all the neighborhood houses are alike, how none have ugly trim, and all the mailboxes match and there are no cars parked on the street, etc, etc, etc. I want to buy a house here and violate all the rules that made this place attractive to me."
I would never have anything to do with any such contract. Voluntarily giving up your rights to a governing authority is not liberty.People who do that would not be uncomfortable in giving up their rights to the national or state government in return for some material benefit. The mindset is there. It doesn’t take much to go the next step and the next. Socialism is so nice and secure.
We all purchase our homes based on what we like, not based on whether there is an HOA in place or not.
______
And this is apparently what got your dad in trouble. I’d suggest that the nature of the HOA in a subdivision would be one of the factors determining whether you like the place or not.
Isnt it EVERY Americans right to choose whatever organizations he/she wishes to belong or not belong?
_______
LOL. And purchasing a home in an area with a mandatory HOA by definition means you want to join that club. You don’t have to buy there.
