Veterans Day thread from a couple years ago

Lord,
Keep our Troops forever in Your care
Give them victory over the enemy...
Grant them a safe and swift return...
Bless those who mourn the lost. .
FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer for all those serving their country at this time.

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues
Where Duty, Honor and Country are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.
|
Our Mission: The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans. In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support. The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer. If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions. We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

A Little Reminder of why the Foxhole began.
Every Day Should Be Veterans Day
Mash The Picture
Why Are You Marching, Son? I'd really like to know! Is it because of Valley Forge, or perhaps the Alamo? Or, "One if by land--two if by sea," A trumpet's call...the will to be free? And what of a man who stood straight and tall, Who wept silent tears when he saw brave men fall? No matter--no difference--the blue or the gray, All were his brothers...how often he'd pray. And what of Antietam--that now peaceful stream Where the water, blood-red, glittered and gleamed? Appomattox...Chickamauga..Vicksburg...Bull Run... Cumberland...Gettysburg...and then Washington. Why Are You Marching, Son?
In Flanders Fields, how proud were they Whose forms beneath the poppies lay. Men who saw Verdun... And died at the Marne...Soissons... And those who tried the fearful foe at Chateau-Thierry, Who fought and bled...whose hearts grew weary, But in whose minds one thought kept churning-- That the torch of liberty keep burning. Why Are You Marching, Son?
The planes swarmed in, and the rising sun Glowed fiercely on the evil done To men whose blood runs through our veins, Men who died, and whose remains Lie forever locked in waters deep. Now, is it right that they should sleep While the warm sea laps at a twisted hull And see the torch of liberty grow dull? Anzio...Cassino...and the Po! St. Mere Eglise...Le Mans...St. Lo! Gardelegen...Buchenwald... On and on the roll is called! And why?...Why Are You Marching, Son?
Bugles shrilled in the frozen night, And at first dawn, the awful sight Of seas of men...row after row, Left to die on blood-stained snow! Pusan...Pyongyang...Suwan...Kyongju! And blood-red ran the swift Yalu!
In South Vietnam the big guns roared, And once again we fought a war To honor a pledge our nation gave To help that little country save Her people from the certainty That she'd be ruled by tyranny.
No matter where the big guns roar, Our fighting men, like those before, Take the torch we all hold dear And face freedom's enemies without fear. Our fathers died from sea to sea, And blessed the torch of liberty. Why?...Why Are You Marching, Son?

To My Father and Uncle "The Warriors"
Sometimes a warrior fights alone,
His enemy within
Battling him,
No swords or high-tech weapons,
Or John Waynes 'heading 'em off at the pass',
No armies buoying him to vanquish the foes,
He knows his own strength,
And he employs it daily,
Without rancor or revenge.
He climbs and claws through the foray,
Each day,
He prays,
Aware it could go either way.
But he does not yield,
Having done war
Many times before,
Conceding only this:
A warrior doesn't always die
In a dogfight in the sky,
Or on a battlefield.
So now the battle's ended,
But still his spirit soars,
He's won his prize,
His peace,
The end of all his wars.
Morning Glory . . . Mach 6.

Changed Lives Are Possible
Do not marvel that I said to you, "You must be born again." John 3:7
|
Lord Kenneth Clark, internationally known for his television series Civilization, lived and died without faith in Jesus Christ. In his autobiography, he wrote about an overwhelming religious experience he had while visiting a beautiful church.
"My whole being," Clark wrote, "was irradiated by a kind of heavenly joy far more intense than anything I had known before." Unfortunately, the "flood of grace," as he described it, created a problem for him. If he allowed himself to be influenced by it, he knew he would have to change. His family might think he had lost his mind. Or perhaps the intense joy would prove to be an illusion. So he concluded, "I was too deeply embedded in the world to change course."
What a tragedy! If only he had responded to that grace-granted glimpse of another world! If only he had allowed it to turn his attention away from this world and toward Jesus! Then he would have become a part of that invisible world, which is not an illusion but a glorious reality.
God can enable any of us to change, no matter how deeply embedded we may be in this world. The miracle of the new birth (John 3:5-7) will take place when we say yes to the stirring of God's grace in our souls. Vernon Grounds
The Savior is waiting to save you
And cleanse every sin-stain away;
By faith you can know full forgiveness
And be a new creature today! Bosch
Salvation is not reformation but transformation.

I find the Russian 14.5 mm a good cartridge. The standard bullet is about 1,000 grains, about seven to the pound, with a muzzle velocity of 3.300 feet per second. The standard projectile will penetrate one inch of high quality steel armor (called "RHA") at a one mile range.
The ZPU 4, pictured, has 4 guns with a total of forty shots per second.
There were a gob of these weapons in Iraq. An efficient use of this system is to draw helicopters well within it's one mile range, say by getting an American unit in trouble in a big city or while an American helicopter is attempting a rescue.
