Lord,

Keep our Troops forever in Your care

Give them victory over the enemy...

Grant them a safe and swift return...

Bless those who mourn the lost.
.

FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer
for all those serving their country at this time.

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

Should women be allowed to serve in Combat Arms?

Background for discussion

Wednesday May 11, 2005

Washington AFP

Republicans in the US House of Representatives introduced legislation that would sharply curtail the role of women on the battlefield.

The measure -- a last-minute add-on to a defense funding bill for the upcoming fiscal year-- would remove women from the army combat support units in which they currently serve, and would ban them from such units in the future.

"The majority of Congress believes women should not be engaged in combat-related activities," said Republican Representative John McHugh, chairman of a House of Representatives subcommittee tasked with overseeing military personnel matters.

Women in the US military are currently banned from combat, but often work in support roles on or near the battlefield -- a practice which McHugh and other Republicans said must change.

"Women should be barred from those positions, " he said, adding that only 31 women would be affected by the policy change.

"The current ban on women in combat needs to be preserved," McHugh said at a meeting of the House Armed Services subcommittee.

Opposition Democrats, however, strenuously objected to the measure, saying it would affect many more women than Republicans claim, and could have a negative effect on overall military morale.

"Todya, women are essential to our ability to fight the war in Iraqand the global war on terrorism. If our nation is truly committed to winning these wars and meeting our other defense requirements, we cannot afford to reject the talents of women, who have served so well, " said Representative Ike Skelton, the top Democrat on the Armed Swervices Committee.

Are you heading to the EAA Airventure?

I am flying over on the 28th to bring a worker to the show, and return another to home. Then we have a "VIP Flight" going over on the 29th. I believe I am flying that one, too.

Real, honest to God, I was born and raised here Texans can tell I'm from the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. Nobody else seems to catch it.

I'm undecided on this issue.

On one hand, I don't want to see mothers and daughters put into harm's way. That chivalry thing pops up.

On the other, women have served with distinction since the Revolution and before. Look at the modern IDF, lots of women there. I know that comes from a small populace necessity, but it's real.

I suppose as Bittygirl grows older, my views may solidify one way or another.

Hi miss Feather

We discovered who was leaving the cat food bin open this morning. The culprit had an ear to ear grin when I saw her. She was very pleased with herself, and demonstrated her skill in latching and unlatching the lid.

I'll vote 'no' for women in ground combat or onboard ships. It is almost as harmful to good order and discipline as gays in the military. Female pilots are acceptable, and there are many rear area roles which women can perform>

That's almost exactly what I told Snippy this morning. ;-)

You're trying to be funny but it's true. Last time w_over_w called Sam hogged the phone the entire time. The two of them were chatting about the WBTS.

I'll give you my two cents worth. I'm a woman and I wouldn't want a women in a foxhole with me and I don't believe they should be with the men either. Our men are good men and I think their genuine concern for the safety of the female troop could interfere with their reaction during battle. Pilots are fine. Navy ships, no way. Training together, no.

Their you have it.

Afternoon Glory Folks~

With respect to today's discussion. The closest I ever came to combat was SEC football at LSU. So I'm really not qualified to address this topic. However, I was thinking about the speech Gen. Patton gave to his troops before the Battle of the Bulge wherein he spoke about "when you look over at what use to be your friend and all you see is goo . . . well . . . you'll know what to do. I simply cannot fathom how a man could witness God's most wonderful creation, woman, being wasted in a combat zone.

I express this opinion with the heartfelt thanks to ALL those who serve (past and present), without whom, I could not express this opinion.

You've been away too long, we don't go by that name anymore. It's just . . .
Kaah-lee-forn-ya . . . in honor of the Govinator. ;^)

"It is almost as harmful to good order and discipline as gays in the military. there are many rear area roles which women can perform."

I get so tired of hearing that line. Just how pray tell is it so and by the way did you ever consider that some of us women DON'T want rear area roles? I sure didn't, that's why I didn't enlisted after college years ago. I wasn't raised to sit on the sidelines.

Hey there yourself!

So good to see you again. At the moment it is 93 and sticky.

Just returned from a 17th century emcampment and picked myself a tomahawk that I have been after for the past few years. (Never know when it will come in handy...)

My family and I are heading to Maine next week as our niece will be getting married.

We've rented a house along the coast just outside of Brunswick. We're looking forward to that, and the cooler weather.
