The FReeper Foxhole Presents the Saturday Symposium - May 7th, 2005
our own minds :-)

Posted on 05/06/2005 10:08:51 PM PDT by snippy_about_it

Lord,

Keep our Troops forever in Your care

Give them victory over the enemy...

Grant them a safe and swift return...

Bless those who mourn the lost.
.

FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer
for all those serving their country at this time.

...................................................................................... ...........................................

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

To read previous Foxhole threads or

Who is your favorite Admiral in American Military History and Why?

We'd also like suggestions for other persons, places, and things you would like to see discussed in this new Saturday forum, the Foxhole Saturday Symposium.

sym·po·sium : a social gathering at which there is free interchange of ideas

So now let's get on with the discussion. Pull up a chair or grab a spot on the floor around the virtual Foxhole Cabin and let's chat about "Who is your favorite Admiralin American Military History and Why?"

I also thought it was the reason I wasn't pinged this morning. ;^)

LOL. That would have been a good excuse if it weren't for the fact that I forgot the entire list. Love your tagline today btw. :-)

." It turns out the French can't stand the Brits, Spaniards, Germans, Italians . . . the list goes on.

The reverse is also true.

Easy..Really no contest...Charlie Lockwood..COMSUBPAC..IMHO, he won the war in the Pacific. His tactics strangled the Japanese empire..interrupting the flow of men, raw materials, and supplies for the Jap military. Also, at the start of the war, when many of the first war patrols were returning to Pearl without expending any torpedos..Lockwood relieved a great many of the boat commanders..appointing those who would take the war to the enemy. He ignored the ironclad convention that only Annapolis grads could get a command..he named Reserve officers at boat commanders. He also fought a battle with the Navy brass over the faulty torpedos that plagued the subs during the early part of the war.. and he did it all without having a PR officer in his command.....Charlie Lockwood..he was the best, without a doubt...In the first year after Pearl Harbor, he WAS the offensive arm of the US Navy in the Pacific..

There are many deserving Admirals in our Navy. Just to be different, I am going to say Adm Thomas C. Kinkaid.

He commanded a task force built around the USS Enterprise in 1942 to sieze and hold the Solomon Islands. And in 1943, he retook the Aleutian Islands. He was Commander, 7th Fleet from 1946-1950.

Technically not an admiral, but Commodore George Dewey - that would probably be an Admiral's command today.

Raphael Semmes - Rear Admiral, CSN
