GOP Could Use Some John Mackeys
ConservativeHQ.com ^

In an editorial published in the Wall Street Journal on August 11, Whole Foods CEO John Mackey outlined a seven-point plan for healthcare reform that sought to marginalize the role of government. Conservatives asked themselves: 'Why didn't Republicans think of that?'

Mackey's editorial highlights a very disturbing question with the Republicans' "Road to Recovery:" Where are Republicans?

It's one thing to take some time off from the political spotlight to get one's priorities in order, but to disappear completely during this perfect opportunity leaves one to question how serious Republicans are about coming back from the political wilderness.

Won’t happen, IMHO. The GOP has LICE. (Libertarians Infiltrating Conservative Entities).

LICE don’t believe in “limited gov’t”, they believe in practically “no” gov’t. You can’t send nihilists to represent you in a philosophical debate. You can’t let pacifists and conscientious objects run your military, and you can’t hire atheists as your church’s pastor.

parsy, who says if you want to have a viable political party they kinda oughta believe in politics

Ya, the Republicans really ought to listen to ol’ admitted-Democrat parsi, there—because clearly the problem the Pubbies have had is pushing for too-small government. (eye roll)

Well they musta done something wrong, because in that Great Marketplace of Ideas that we call “elections”, they lost market position and market share. Their only hope of regaining the same, is if the Democrats screw up big time.

Maybe the GOP can use this as their party motto the next few years: “If you elect me to office, I promise to do nothing.”

parsy, who says who knows, maybe it’ll be a winner for the GOP

they believe in practically “no” gov’t

I think that libertarians actually believen in a Constitutional Republic form of government with the federal government doing ONLY what it is authorized to do.

EE who thinks that government at all levels is too intrusive.

Mark Kirk claims to be a key player in the Republican response on Healthcare. Kirk wants to become one of those lifers in the Senate.

Kirk will hold his finger to the wind and come out with his Republican response closer to the primary when it can have the biggest political impact for him. The content will be a bunch of sweet nothing cliches that offend nobody and pass his focus groups.

Hopefully Kirk will find staffers to do it for him more in touch with the real world than the John McGovern’s that Hastert lent to Kirk in the past and who were totally clueless about anything this side of the K Street.

Meanwhile, conservatives have to agree on a single challenger to Kirk, hopefully the summit in Downers Grove this Friday noon will be a step in that direction, even though the governor candidates are featured.

I agree that conservatives have to agree on a single challenger to Kirk, to ensure that the conservative vote won’t split, helping Kirk. When he ran for the U.S. House, in 2000, the primary had 11 Republicans. The conservative vote split, helping Kirk win with 31%. I hope that all IL conservatives will support Dr. Eric Wallace.

No, not really. Ask a real live libertarian whether they believe in minimum wages, wage and hour laws, child labor laws, safety laws, worker’s comp programs, social security, food stamps, medicare, etc. etc. and if they are honest, they say all these things are socialism.

This in spite of all history, law, the Constitution, whatever. Its all socialism.

There’s this one libertarian idiot, Murray Rothbard, of the Austrian Kindergarten of Economics, who believes property rights control abortion. You can kill your baby any time up until it is actually born. Then, you don’t even have to feed it if you don’t want because it interferes with you doing what you want with your right to pursue happiness and be free.

This is why they have to glom onto conservatives and the GOP to advance their insidious little beliefs. If they tried to run on their own, they would either be committed for 72 hour mental evaluations in our more compassionate burgs, or splattered with eggs and rotten veggies in most places.

parsy, who says delouse the GOP if you want to survive

Here’s you a real good link on what’s wrong with libertarians:

http://www.zompist.com/libertos.html

It explains the difference between small gov’t conservatives and libertarians (LICE - Libertarians Infiltrating Conservative Entities)

Ok, I'm a real live libertarian here and I'd agree. Can you show me where any of these are demanded or authorized by the US Constitution? Safety laws could easily be part of Interstate Commerce for the sake of uniformity amongst the states.

The states can do pretty much what they want within the limits of their Constitutions.

This in spite of all history, law, the Constitution, whatever. Its all socialism.

Most of what you've listed was part of the New Deal and not in the federal scheme of things prior to that. Safety and Comp practices date back to Biblical times and also the Laws of Hammorubi, so they have a place in our system. Again, the states can do much more than the federal government can and I don't really care what the adjacent states do, primarily what mine and the fed does.

There’s this one libertarian idiot, Murray Rothbard, of the Austrian Kindergarten of Economics, who believes property rights control abortion. You can kill your baby any time up until it is actually born. Then, you don’t even have to feed it if you don’t want because it interferes with you doing what you want with your right to pursue happiness and be free

There's this one libertarian genius who disagrees with that libertarian idiot. So now you gonna say that all libertarians believe such and such because you found one who does? Even the GOP isn't lockstep on abortion!

This is why they have to glom onto conservatives and the GOP to advance their insidious little beliefs. If they tried to run on their own, they would either be committed for 72 hour mental evaluations in our more compassionate burgs, or splattered with eggs and rotten veggies in most places.

Beg to differ, but the reality is that more conservatives are more libertarian than you like to think. Conservatives have a tendency to want to use the force of federal government to push their own agendas just as the Liberals do, just with different issues.

parsy, who says delouse the GOP if you want to survive

Oh well, parsy, the GOP is the only party in US history to nominate for president the guy most responsible for undermining a GOP majority in both houses while the GOP also had the White House.

So if any GOP members really had any pride they'd either purge the party of those kind of idiots or walk away themselves.

EE who is most assuredly RINO and proud of it.

I did and pretty much dispute it as a collection of straw man arguments.

Even Libertarians do not want NO government, just what we have Constitutionally.

And that is just the beginning of the fallacies on that page.

'GOP Could Use Some John Mackeys'

I think the GOP should start with something small, like first getting some gonads.

And then an instruction book on how to use them.

Oh thank you for saying this! I have been preaching this for years on FR. Note also that the “Code” has what I call minimum wage laws (although they could be maximum wage laws) and regulates business practices. Apparently, watering down the beer was a hanging offense.

Apparently, watering down the beer was a hanging offense.

Fraud. L/libertarians oppose fraud.

The Bible commanded decent treatment of slaves and livestock, too.

Opposition to all government is more anarchy than libertarian.

McCain actually represents the GOP, like it or not, but I doubt you want me using him for the standard of GOP principles and beliefs, right? So yeah, you can find idiots and knuckle heads to call themselves L/libertarian ,like Bill Maher, when in reality John Stossel is the better representative of libertarian thought.

Yes, but some of these libertarians are anarchists. Google “anarcho-capitalists” and see what comes up. It will shock the crap out of you. It did me. Austriam School, von Mises org.

Unfortunately the situation for "conservative unity" in the U.S. Senate race is not looking good at the moment. We now have the sudden entry of Patrick Hughes to deal with, and from what I can see alot of big name leaders in the "movement" ( Family PAC's Paul Caprio, Rev. Bob VandenBosch of Concerned Christians of America, David Diersen of TAPROOT Republicans, former State Rep. Penny Pullen, talk show host Sandy Rios, Tom Roeser, Ralph Rivera of Illinois Citizens for Life, Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum and David Smith of the Illinois Family Institute, and maybe consultant Jon Zahm as well?) have thrown their support to him, further fracturing the anti-Kirk conservative base in the primary.

I'm not sold on Hughes, sounds like another good guy but unknown political amateur. Doesn't have nearly the seasoning, articulation of the issues, or political involvement that Dr. Eric Wallace has on his resume (plus Wallace is bringing in some heavy hitter conservative activists from around the nation like Ken Blackwell and Herman Cain to stump for him).

Supposedly a lot of these leaders are drawn to Hughes because he has the "personal funds" to compete. If so I hope he has about $10 million of "personal wealth" he can burn easily, otherwise I can't see why he'd be stronger choice than Wallace.

Worse, there's a large number of conservatives who actually seem to believe Kirk's little dog and pony show about being adamantly against Obamacare. I hope no Illinois freeper is foolish enough to believe Kirk's routine. Of course he's going to pretend to be on our side now that he needs conservatives money and volunteers for a statewide race. Anyone who thinks Kirk is back on the reservation and genuinely changed his ways should consider what happened after he pulled the same stunt with "re-elect me because I support President Bush on the WOT" in 2006 and then promptly switched sides once he was returned to office. I don't trust Kirk as far I can throw him. He has proven he will say anything to get votes.

Now more than ever, getting conservatives on the same page in Illinois seems to be like trying to herd cats with a water pistol. I just wish we could get all these conservative candidates in a room together and have them emerge with ONE agreed upon consensus candidate that everyone else will agree to support. Draw straws if you must (and please nothing like 2006 where Oberweis says 'I should get a bigger straw because I have much better name ID, nevermind the fact I can't get elected dog catcher')

At least we can thankful the comptroller's race appears to have shaped up into a one-on-one battle between RINO combiner Topinka and conservative reformer Bill Kelly.

Bad idea's according to parsy's link:

* Reagan's "Government is the problem"

* Phil Gramm's contention that the country's "economic crisis" and "moral crisis" were due to "the explosion of government"

* Talk radio hosts' advocacy of armed resistance to "jack-booted government thugs"

* Dole's 1996 campaign, advancing the notion that

taxes were "Your Money" being taken from you

* Gingrich's Contract with America (welfare cuts, tax cuts, limitations on corporations' responsibility and on the government's ability to regulate them)

* Dick Armey's comment that Medicare (medical aid for the elderly) is "a program I would have no part of in a free world"

* Bush's tax cuts, intended not only to reward the rich but to "starve the beast", in Grover Norquist's words: to create a permanent deficit as a dangerous ploy to reduce social spending

* Jeb Bush's hope that the Florida state government buildings would one day be empty

* Intellectual support for attacks on the quality of working life in this county and for undoing the New Deal

Seem like good positions to me.
