Washington, D.C. - Following a solid McCain victory in the Super Tuesday primaries, the Libertarian Party has sent Republican headquarters a funeral wreath marking the death of limited-government values within the Republican Party. The wreath was hand-delivered to the D.C. offices of the Republican National Committee. "We simply felt the need to express our heartfelt sympathy for the Republican Party as they undergo this tough time within their party," says Libertarian Party National Media Coordinator Andrew Davis, who delivered the wreath.
"Given that it has become readily apparent that Senator McCain will soon be the presidential nominee for the Republican Party," reads a card that accompanied the wreath addressed to RNC Chairman Mike Duncan, "we, the staff of the Libertarian National Committee, send our condolences to you upon the death of small-government principles within the GOP."
The note continues:
Libertarians encourage competition within both the free-market and politics. Unfortunately, with the rise of John McCain and the big-spending practices of the Bush administration, the two-party system has emerged as representing only one philosophy - big-government liberalism.
With your loss, the Libertarian Party will continue to move forward to represent those American patriots who still believe in smaller government, lower taxes and more individual freedom.
"McCain's Super Tuesday win marks the death of limited government values within the Republican Party, which had struggled with its principles throughout the Bush administration," says Shane Cory, executive director of the Libertarian Party. "It is a day of mourning for the few remaining small-government Republicans."

The Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting www.lp.org. The Libertarian Party proudly stands for smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom.
So you'd consider Nixon a "surrender monkey" too?
They owe me a new monitor. Hehhe... They may just get another $25 out of me yet...
I'm not dead yet.....
The Libertarian Party has long recognized the importance of allowing free and open immigration, understanding that this leads to a growing and more prosperous America. We condemn the xenophobic immigrant bashing that would build a wall around the United States. At the same time, we recognize that the right to enter the United States does not include the right to economic entitlements such as welfare. The freedom to immigrate is a freedom of opportunity, not a guarantee of a handout.
End entitlements and handouts, the only ones coming here are the ones we WANT here. Repeal all the crap infringing our RKBA and "sudden jihad syndrome" and attacks like 9/11 become impossible.
Government isn't the solution to those issues. Government CAUSED those issues. The LP has it right on these.
Not a fan of the LP’s foreign policy or a few of their other kookier planks, but this is funny.
My position too. AND that inclues free daycare otherwise known as public school.
Because the Dems are a lost cause. Republicans, however, are supposed to know better!
This removes the "indoctrination center" effect and increases quality of education.
Like I tried to state in 44, but left out a crucial word, if you end all the freebies, the only people who would want to come here are the exact same types of folks who are a benefit to us. Like my Russian immigrant Father and his family. My Grandfather shoveled coal on the Soo Line in MLPS and my Grandmother sorted paper for recycling. My Dad went to school, learned the language, joined the Army, and became a Sheriffs deputy.
The American dream in a nut shell and done without one dime of welfare. If you are willing to work, and the government doesn't prevent you via regulation and taxation, you can achieve here. However, the government makes it harder to do with every Session of Congress.
This must change or this Country is through as a "free Republic". It may already be too late now that the Election is coming down to be between two "Bigger Government" Nationalists.
“With your loss, the Libertarian Party will continue to move forward to represent those American patriots who still believe in smaller government, lower taxes and more individual freedom.”
If the LP were anti-drug, pro-closed borders and strong on national security and pro-life, I’d vote for them.
How much stronger on National Security do you need to be when one of your party planks is the Second Amendment expressed in a way that the GOP ignores? An armed civilian population is one of the best deterrents to both crime and terror.
Agree - rob (tax) the hard working and pass endless regulations on how everything has to be done from the EPA to the ADA
I forgot to add, “and if many of their proponents weren’t complete jackasses.”
It's been happening longer than that. I used to post in a local Pittsburgh group on USENET before groups like FR were big (pgh.opinion) which the local LP members used to write to. They were big cheerleaders of the ALCU and unlimited immigration, illegal or otherwise.
To be fair, people like Bill Maher and Howard Stern are what I call "Porn and Pot Libertarians". They are into libertarians for the vices and not the virtues, and call themselves libertarians because liberal is out of vogue.
I met a number of principled libertarians back in the 90s.
Real hard-core Jefforsonian liberals. ( By Jeffersonian liberals I mean people who were 100% in favor of individual liberty.) Now I see appeasers, Marxists, socialialists, etc., calling themselves libertarians. That’s a real shame. I’m getting tired of the damn friggin’ marxists taking over all our good organizations.
A day of reckoning is coming soon.
This is one quagmire we'll never get out of.
There's that whole thing about smaller government for everybody not just people you don't like.
This is funny and sad at the same time.
And then some other knucklehead comes along and want them to be for anti-gambling, no alcohol sales, smoking prohibition, health care entitlement asking for, class warfare rhetoric spewing embracer...and then you have a Social Conservative who has as much big-governmet tendencies than does a hard Left-leaning Democrat.
